I added a bazooka last night and after tearing out all the 2 inch thick inserts, spare tire, plastic, etc, there is a huge trunk back there! Has anyone looked at moving the spare underneath?

Also, when I was running the power lead, I notice a plastic box just under where the spare tire is, with all kinds of wires and tubes, what is that thing?

it's probably the fuel pump

fuel pump is in the fuel tank.

i believe it was found out to be part of the emissions.
do a search for more info on that.

but yes i did remove all that stuff. then i got out the hammer and pounded the 'non-functional' tire well flat. made a real big trunk! then i filled it back up with stereo stuff.

ditch the spare and buy run-flats!

Ive already had a flat and im about to go to low pros so I think I will keep my spare but it is a LOT of room!

the black box is your charcoal cannister. It can be moved. You also have the jack point at the rear of the bodywork to deal with and that is a more difficult proposition. You may be able to squeeze the tire into the space, but it will be a tight fit behind the rear axle crosspiece.

Toyota really screwed this up. bBs don't have a spare, so they used the "quick and dirty" approach to putting a spare inside the xB, including the kludge of putting the jack under the driver's seat. If they had put a bit more effort into it, they could easily have put the spare underneath the rear, opening up several more cubic feet of storage in the back of the car.

I dread ever having to use the spare if I am on the road with luggage in the back. The road wheel doesn't fit in the spare tire space. Using Toyota's Rube Goldberg net to hold the tire behind the seat leaves no space for any cargo that was originally there.

Here's a thought. Carry a battery-powered saw. If you get a flat, use the saw to cut the tire off the wheel, since it will be trash by the time you can pull off the road. Stow the wheel, leave the tire behind. Well, it's a thought.

Chris (autosound) has his spare mounted underneath. He had to because of his custom enclosure.

As George stated the charcoal cannister can be moved, but when you do move it, make sure the car is OFF. That is, if you decide to undo any of the fuel/vac lines.

I seem to recall a thread from the other day where he was talking about his box dying on the highway.
My guess is he blew a tranny.

OOH! We need pictures!

The other disadvantage to moving the charcoal canister is that Scions seem to be susceptable to problems with the vent plumbing, throwing trouble codes if things aren't perfectly sealed. If you move the canister and later on have this sort of problem the dealer will blame your mod for the problem, perhaps with some justification.

YES to pulling all that foam out - there's LOTS more room then. And I'm looking at getting a roofrack, and locking the spare up there. Also, if you flip the spare over (so the wheel is a bowl instead of a dome) you get more room, and can buy short bolt to hold it down (I found a big wingnut looking thing in my garage from another car that fit perfect.) but under would be nice...

It wouldn't be hard to revamp the trunk floor in such a way as to maximize space. Just take out all the foam and plastic, throw the spare in the large circular depression that's filled by that black plastic thing, and cover everything with MDF and carpet.

i thought that box underneath was the fume pump -safety thingy to see if there are any fuel leaks(sounds like a California emmissions requirement) but any way I think the spare could still be held under there with some 1/4 inch steel straps connected to what looks like the hitch connectors

You could fit the spare under there but you would have to jack it up first to get it in and out. Or just carry Fix a Flat in a can. LOL

what do you guys think of having a spare 5th wheel on the rear. make it like the jeeps where it would open out ward so you can open the hatch up..

i think just having the right items and the right paint for the assembly and a tire cover with the scion logo.

Maybe a photoshopper could whip something up so we could visuallize what that would look like.

My worst nightmare is taking out my spare... And then getting a flat.

I'd rather not have my xB look a jeep btw :-p

I think I'm going to have to take a look under there. it's somewhat a pain if I wanna store stuff in there because you gotta take the carpet off and undo the hinges on that thing. Damn toyota!

so lets say you 18"s on your ride. you would rather have sitting under the car (dirty, chipped) im thing more like a baby boxed caddy with my 18"s blinding everybody behind me.

this frame for the 5th wheel wont look hand made like it came from the backyard of somebodys uncles house...lol

you want space, people want to drop their ride and if they do the spare will still have to come out, but no spare. so the 5th wheel doesn't sound that bad anymore. give it an upgrade. make it look different

I still think there is room under the back- dodge caravans have a rachet pulley with a cable that cincnes the tire up tight. I wouldn't dare drill sheet metal to mount a swing out on the back-fraid it wouldn't hold... P S has anyone bought a dash cover to protect that expensive plastic?

I just could not imagine not having a spare and the fix a flat being the one bad can in thousand and failing to work properly, or having a tear in the tire that fix a flat wont fix and then having to leave my box on the side of the highway with all that stereo and rims and things that people look notice. having a really nice car built with hard earned money sitting abandoned on the shoulder is perfect for being stolen when the only witnesses are cruising by doing 80 mph. out here cars have been loaded up by crooked roll back drivers or stripped down in only a few minutes after dark. I am sure insurance could help out but damn to be ripped off for not having a spare? no chance no way ( maybe I am paranoid)

I guess there is always road side assistance. but most people can change a tire in about 10-15 minutes and still get to work on time. roadside from aftermarket companies always takes forever to arrive and then they take you somewhere to get the tire fixed whuchjust kills half a day. tires and gasoline are the two most important items for reliable and essential point a to point b travel. besides with all the quality stereo equipment out there one should be able to install one very impressive very loud and functional stereo/video system without sacrificing dependability.

so sorry for rambling on. but nobody takes a bad day into consideration. they happen when you need it the least.

so what do you think 5th wheel or no 5 th wheel?

I guess we should be happy the spare is in the floor instead of standing up against the side trim in the rear like GM did with the S-10 Blazers. Remember those hidious spare tires.

I would'nt worryabout it too much. If you keep your tires properly inflated and replace them when they are worn you don't get flats too often. Of course there is always the unexpected!!

So if the fix-a-flat let's you down you always have a cellphone to call a flatbed if you have expensive stuff inside your car. Otherwise carry your spare or hoof-it and take your chances.

Exactally, I have towing on my insurance. If my can of fix-a-flat doesn't work I can get towed.
