hey all

got cruise control installed when I bought my xB and it is pretty lame.

it's the little stalk that everyone else uses too, I can't remember the name, something with
an R.

anyhow, when I set, the car slows down about 5 MPH then the cruise kicks in and the car speeds up, but it's pretty annoying.

anyone have this problem? was I spoiled by the near seamless cruise on my WRX?
this was a GREAT system.

I haven't installed one, but I think it's spooling the throttle cable in that 5 seconds... I'm used to my parents' cruise control in their Caravan and Durango. I don't think aftermarket cruise controls can get any better than factory installed/designed cruise controls. All I can recommend is take it to the dealership and tell them the problem. Suggest to get the cruise control cable tighted or something.. calibrated? *shrug*

I haven't used mine very much yet but in my testing: It works great... No Problems.

Rostra.com makes a cruise control custom kit for Scions.

PART # 250-1755 - custom for Toyota Scion
http://www.rostra.com/cc-250-1755.asp

http://www.rostra.com/images/P1160898-rec.jpg

The accessories dealer that contracts with my Toyota/Scion dealer installed one of these kits in my xB. It costs about $245 including labor.

I think the kit looks factory and the features are excellent! I like it better than the Toyota stock Cruise on my wife's Camry! :D RPM

I got mine installed yesterday. I only tested it on the way home last night, and it seemed to work just fine.

The link is a pictute of where they installed the control module.

Here's a post where 2 separate Scion owners express satisfaction with the Rostra Cruise Control Scion kit:

Sorry to hear you paid that much. Ouch!! RPM

Gee, think you could link to a higher res image? That one was only a 2304x1728! :)

I am serving them up locally on my web server, and usually remember to post a warning about the size. If you are a non-broadband user I am doubly sorry.

I'm on a big pipe here, but the image size is such that all that shows on the browser is a small portion of the full image. I suppose that some browsers might auto-scale, but many don't. A 640x480 image would be much more visible on all browsers and would take less than 1/10 the bandwidth!

Sorry about that. I set things up on a run between customer calls this morning.

Jim: You may have noticed this, but the Operating Instructions say:

ON: ...Push the Cruise ON/OFF button ON. (Green indicator will light). Wait 3 seconds before setting speed.

I've been using mine a lot now. It's working great! It's so easy to operate... just 3 small push buttons. I especially like the Tap-Up and Tap-Down feature... Increases or decreases speed by 2 MPH with each tap. :D RPM

Here's some pics:

I personally don't like them. They look too universal and after-market. I think my Rostra handle looks factory and is right there at my left hand for easy quick access. :D RPM

Your right-hand picture is actually a Rostra "remote" switch that attaches to the plastic shroud behind the steering wheel. Part No 250-1588:

http://store3.yimg.com/I/electronman_1800_823451

As you can see, it has a receiver module that plugs into the cruise control box. The commands are carried by RF from the switch to the receiver.

Here's the only picture I could find of the RF switch on a steering wheel. Look at the wheel, itself. The RF switch looks pretty "factory" when installed. The bad news is that the switch costs about $65. Still, I think it looks a lot better than having yet another stalk hiding behind the wheel.

Here are comments from a DIY installer of the Rosta cruise on an xA

http://www.allscion.com/cruisecontrol_remarks.html

The Rostra site itself is very poor. They don't even have pictures or links to the RF switch, even though they refer to it on the site!

whats it take to wire that steering wheel switch?
thats what I wanted from the get go, but I was told it wasn't
available...

can you have both the stalk and the remote switch?
i wouldn't use the stalk, but it's already there...

I haven't done it, but from the descriptions I've seen all you need to do it mount the remote switch on the steering wheel, plug the receiver into the cruise control "brain" and go. There are no wires from the remote switch to the cruise, it's all done with RF.

I don't know about running the stalk switch in parallel with the remote switch. Rostra uses two different control formats (normally open, normally closed) and the two switches may not be compatible.

I like the looks of the remote switch better, but it definitely adds more complexity and failure points to the system. You've got a battery in the remote switch to go dead, and the transmitter and receiver to screw up. It's certainly better than the stalk, though. I don' t like the idea of attaching that stalk to a piece of plastic that isn't designed to hold it. One wrong move with your knee and the plastic's broken!

It appears from George's pic that you wire the RF wireless receiver module to the Rostra main controller and mount the wireless transmitter switch onto the steering wheel. It looks like a nice clean unit, but costly (in both parts & labor).

I suggest you call Rostra Customer Service & Tech Support and discuss how to perform this change... you probably can not use both the stalk and the wireless switch together... but ask Rostra.

The following post reports that Rostra's Service was excellent for the poster.

Good luck with all this and let us all know how it works out. Thanks. :D RPM

Can someone post pics of the cruise control stalk installed on the steering column?
Also, how is this thing secured and does it feel sturdy when touched or like it's going to break?

Is this cruise control kit plug-n-play? Any cutting of wires required? All the hardware included?

Thanks!

It is far from plug and play, but works great. The stalk is very solid and well made.

Thanks for posting the pic. Any of the actual insert of the column and a drivers shot view?

My xB cruise really sucked. At my 5K point I mentioned it to the service writer and a tech came out, popped the hood, took a look and drove it off. Five minutes later he was back. Seems the throttle cable on the unit is too long and the adjust or shorten it. Works like a champ now. It may now be a TSB, not sure.

The picture is the drivers view. The stalk is on the lower left at between 7:30 and 8 on the wheel. The stalk mounts to the column surround and has a back nut on it.
