525 miles out of a tank! UPDATE #12
First of all I'm not a hyper miler, not even close...but I am kind of a hyper tanker
, let me explain. I'm more interested in miles per tank rather than MPG, but not to the point of doing things the hyper milers do....some of those things are down right dangerous.
My box is a stock daily driver with the exception of tein s techs & the snorkle is removed, thats it. To make a long story short, I drive with a feather foot...below the speed limit at times, but never over it. My commute is 90 miles a day and 95% of that is good old state highway, but 80% of my drive is one big rollercoaster...uphill and downhill. There's only a total of 10 traffic lights between me and work which helps alot, and 99% of the time I'm the only one who drives my box, I have a wife and 3 kids but 99% of the time they dont get near it
A couple more points of interest...when I fill the tank up (I use exxon 87 octane) I fill it up to the tippy top, and yes, sometimes a few drops of gas get on the ground
, (I know, it's wierd, it's a guy thing, lol). My goal is simple...I want to fill up 1 time a week, I want to get 500 miles out of each tank, and I'm almost there!
UPDATE #1
This week I got 454.4 miles out of a tank, I just filled up and the tank took 11.9 gallons of Exxon 87 octaine...if my math is right thats 38.1 MPG.
Today I'm putting in a k&n drop in filter, Ill post my miles next Saturday.
UPDATE #2
I finished my latest tank with 436.6 miles...this was the first tankful using the k&n drop in filter, everything else under my hood is stock. I got 454 miles out of the tank before this. Just so you follow me...I got 38 MPG last week, I got 36+ MPG this week with the new air filter...I'll give the k&n filter another week or 2, if I cant get the mileage I want with the k&n air filter then out it comes, Ill drop in a brand new oem filter...Ill keep you posted!
UPDATE #3
My mileage dropped again! This tankful I only got 421.4 miles, that comes out to 35.4 MPG...IMPORTANT NOTE: I had to use Shell 87 octane, I almost always use Exxon 87 octane, draw your own conclusions, me personally I dont think the k&n is right for my driving situation. Im on vacation all this week so I need to decide if Im going back to the oem filter. Im also switching to full synthetic oil this week (castrol syntec 5w-30), I'll keep you posted.
UPDATE #3a
Im on vacation this week (tee hee), I did change the oil to full synth (castrol syntech) I also put a new OEM air filter in (I kept the k&n drop in filter). I'm wondering if I should check the spark plugs...reason I say that is my idle while im in drive is kind of shakey. My next update will be on Sat. April 14.
UPDATE # 4
I got my 2nd best tank this week, 440 miles! Would you believe I filled up with 12.37 gallons! I must have been running on fumes. My next mod is to take off the snorkle, Ill do my next tank with the OEM air filter and the tank after that with the k&n air filter, I hope removing the snorkle will get me up into the 470 mile range, it will be fun to watch for the next couple of weeks, Ill keep you posted.
UPDATE #5
After removing the snorkel I got my best tank so far...464 miles. I filled up but not to the tippy top, only 12 gallons on the dot
, Im taking the OEM air filter out and putting the k&n air filter back in for next weeks commute, after next weeks tank Ill be putting in some denso iridiums...as always Ill post my results next week.
FINAL UPDATE
470 miles out of this tank! But hold the applause, I RAN OUT OF GAS!!!
, Luckily I happened to have a gas can with me, the gas station was another mile and a half down the road...so I think my work is done here on this thread, I doubt more mods will increase my mileage by much and besides, I cant think of any more to do for better mileage
. Although this is my final update please lets keep the discussion going, can you imagine if everyone in the country drove economically? Gas prices would plummet.
FINAL UPDATE (NOT!!!)
please go to http://www.lubedev.com/smartgas/additive.htmand read this article, I tried one of Lou's ideas and...lets just say 500 miles out of a tank might just happen for me tomorrow! I finished my weekly commute today at 432 miles, but get this, my fuel light hasnt even come on yet!!! Read the FAQ that Lou has prepared, lets talk about it...I'll have a full update tomorrow on my latest tank, look out 500!
UPDATE #6
Lets get right to the numbers shall we, my last 2 tanks were 470 and 472 miles, then I added 100% pure acetone to my tank (approx 3 OZ. maybe a tad more), then I filled up with 11.9 gallons...I got 495 miles out of this tank, my fuel light didnt come on until 437 miles. I just filled up with 11.9 gallons and added the same amount of acetone...next week when I fill up Ill add the Torco gp-7 & the acetone and see what that gets me.
UPDATE #7
I got 484 miles this tank, it took 11.6 gallons to fill up. Before I filled up this morning I mixed 2-3oz. of pure acetone with 1-2oz. of Torco gp-7 two stroke racing oil and put it in the tank, I have no idea what to expect mileage wise but Ill let you know. I think I could have got to 500 this morning but I was on my way to work and the next gas station was not very close.
UPDATE #8
Finally. I got 500.5 miles out of this tank, it took 12.073 to fill it...this is the second time ive got a reading of over 12 gallons on refill, the first time I spilled some gas but this time not a drop, I must have been running on fumes! I still have a couple of more mods to do before Im convinced that my miles per tank cant get any better, as always Ill keep you posted.
UPDATE #9
515 miles out of my last tank, I drove a bit slower than usual and coasted more than usual. The gas light came on around its usuall spot 435 miles...when I filled up and got to the first click the tank had taken 11.2 gallons, I ended up putting in 11.7 gallons plus my 12 ounce mixture of gasoline/acetone/gp-7. For the next tank Im trying something interesting...its just too hot in the afternoon driving home so I will be running the a/c on max with the fan set at level 1, im curious to see how my miles will hold up while using the a/c.
UPDATE #10
This tankful was dedicated to seeing if using the a/c 50% of the time would affect mileage...and how! I ended up with 422 miles on the tank and then refilled with 11.6 including the 12 ounce gasoline/acetone/gp-7 mix. I used the a/c during my return trip home from work each day and a bit on the weekend...I had the a/c set to max but I only had the fan set to "1". So there it is scionlifers, using the a/c cost me a cool 7.75 MPG (does that sound right?) Ouchy. In the next couple of tankfuls Id like to test the affect of having all 4 windows cracked about 1-2", see what that does to my mileage.
UPDATE #11
Long story short...on my wifes birthday shes driving back from a family bridal shower and an uninsured driver made an illegal left turn in front of her which totalled both cars, no injuries except some stiff necks a couple of days latter...I only got 482 miles out of my tank (the wifeypoo needed my car for half a day =D). My car wasn't involved in the accident, it was my wifes minivan.
UPDATE #12
525 miles out of my last tank! I drove as conservatively as I could, lots of coasting, lots of turning the engine off when sitting still...I also took out the back seat mid way through the week so that helped a little. Just to review: I have the snorkle off, I use pure acetone and torco gp-7 in my gas, I have the k&n drop in filter, I use a custom blend of different torco motor oils and advanced lubricants along with baldwin oil filters...I change my oil filter (not my oil) every 2000 miles, I change the oil between 6000-8000 miles, I use ngk v-power plugs gapped to .025 and I only use exxon 87 octane.

holy moley. how ? the most i've ever gotten out of a tank was around 310 miles, and that was when i was driving EXTREMELY conservatively .... (having an auto probably plays a big part in this). typically, i get 260-280 miles out of one tank .... sucks ... though i have power mods, so it's kind of expected.
I think one reason why the mileage is getting better is because I've driven the same commute in my box for almost a year now, I'm learning when I can let off the gas and coast a bit, and because I drive an 18 wheeler all day I dont want to drive anywhere on the weekends so my car just sits...whats cool is I still havent done any engine mods for even better mileage.
dang im jealous... the most ive ever gotten from my xb is 240 to a tank. i have an automatic with a k&n drop in filter and a 2.25 muffler. i would always use 89 octane but it sucked. i went down to 87 and i think its better gas miles... what octane are you guys using?? whats better?? anyone else have the same problem??
kudos
my best so far is 423.8 I probably could have gone further but was happy that I hit the 400 mark, I know how you feel!
I have eibach pro kit, and k&n filter
ever since I hit about 8k, I believe just after my 2nd oil change I have always hit over 400.
gotta love the 5 speed.

dang that alotta miles out of a tank of gas! the best i have gotten has been like 310. automatic trans and only 1500 miles on my box so far.... howdy saddlesore tanker driver for about 15 years now from the pdx area!! yeaaaaaa-10!! lol
So how many gallons do you usually put in on a fill-up? 12 gal = 36.5 mpg, 11 gal = 39.5 mpg... that's some fine fuel-efficient driving you're doing there. Got your tires at high pressure? Synthetic oil?
Maybe you should change your handle to featherfoot.
Maybe you should change your handle to featherfoot.
I just drive pretty normal, I rarely have to go over 55mph, I work like 70-80 hours a week and I only live about 3 mile from my job, I mainly just drive back and forth to work, I havent tried to run 87-89 octane, I always use 93, I know it probably doesnt make that much of a difference but I dunno if its in my head or what but my car seems to run better with 93, esp if Im running the AC, but like I said it could be just in my head, I think next tank Ill run 87 and then let you all know my mileage, and then Ill give 89 a try.
Does anyone else run 93? Does it make a difference?

HEY HEY! another 'pro driver!..
good to see that there are a few of us "in da box"
skate-board and heavy haul here
catch ya on da flipper

You are telling us you are getting 40 MPG or that you have a 14 gallon tank.............
my last two tanks were close to 35 MPG....in an Automatic Box, not too bad....The only thing I changed on my motor was a TRD drop-in filter.
dang that alotta miles out of a tank of gas! the best i have gotten has been like 310. automatic trans and only 1500 miles on my box so far....
Well, i have an auto. I presume this is a very bad idea? I've not tried due to that presumption
I just ordered the k&n drop in filter, when I get it I'll do a tankful and report my total miles...by then my 4th oil change will be due, I'll be switching to royal purple synthetic, after that tankfull is complete I'll report those miles as well.
