Biz card holder a great accessory mount! - pics
Since buying my xB a few weeks ago I'd been searching for a good location to put my 2 way radio control head. I wanted something totally reversible. I noted the business card holder on the back of the center dash storage area door, and came up with the following.

I mocked up the mount on card stock, and transfered to the sheet metal. Gave it a fold to add depth and hopefully stay snug in the holder..

I needed a curl and a twist to orient the mount toward the driver which gives a little opening of the door, but without the curl, it closed flush.

Final install after some semi-gloss black paint. Its rigid, I can still open and use the compartment, and totally reversable. One could make mounts for cell phones, pda, etc... My work was a bit sloppy, not having any metal working tools, but others could certainly get neater results.

I finally finished the install of the rest of the radio, antenna this weekend, and have finally been using the radio's control head.
I'm finding the control head is in a good position, the sheet metal is stiff enough (though a bit thicker would be excellent) to handle the depressing of buttons. I did find once when I hit a large bump, the weight of the control head encouraged the door to open. I'll continue to see if it happens a lot. I might have to adjust the "curl" so the door closes flush and tightly.
btw: for the record, anyone searching in the future for 2 way radio install ideas. I installed a Yaesu 7800 duel band ham radio (VHF/UHF). I used a Diamond K412XCNMO hatch mount on the hatch door top. Temporarily using an existing 55" duel band antenna which is oversized for the Diamond mount.. I mounted the radio base in the passenger side trunk compartment (screwed & washered the radio mount). I plan to install a vent on the right side trunk bed unit (I listen a lot more than I transmit, so hopefully heat won't be a problem for me). I ran control & audio cables down the passenger side (speaker under passenger dash area), and power through the driver side gromit and down the driver side. Fused both ends... 73's
