workerB conversion
Hi Guys,
I just finished off doing what I'm calling a "worker B conversion".
I removed the rear seat assembly and fabricated a 4' x 4' flatbed inside the car.
I took pictures of the process but have no way to post them..can anyone take the pics from me on e-mail and post them?

I would like to see those pics. I have always wondered if its possible because my friend took out all of his rear seats and said that it is setup to turn into like a cargo van but he never did anything yet. He wanted to see if anyone else did it first. You can also use photobucket to post pics. to me that is the easiest.

Pimpe OK, thanks, I just sent you the pics I have so far. This is a working conversion for my A/C business so it is geared around tools. I have a metal headknocker screen built to protect the occupants from getting impaled if there is a mishap. I'll mount that tomorrow. My biggest challange is where to put the spare tire. I have considered a continental kit, hanging it inverted from the inside roof, putting it outside on the roof rack...no decision yet. I have 8 hours labor and 90 bucks in material up to this point.

Seems like a useful solution to using the xB to haul stuff safely. Also, just open a photobucket account to host the pics you want to post on here. It's FREE!
That looks great. Can you give some more details as far as how much work went into this and also how much you actually had to remove. I'm interested in something like this but want to be able to go back to stock quickly.

They all look great only problem I see is with ElChupacabras set-up. The way you have your harness set-up it would compress your spine in a wreck. You should add a cross bar higher up between the B pillers to mount your harness to.
There wern't nuttin' to it.
I pulled the rear seat bottom (by hand) and removed the rear seat back, three 12mm bolts and two 14mm bolts. I bagged these items in contractor Hefty bags and tossed them in the attic. I then removed the two foam compartments in the rear with the lids and bagged and stored these as well. (1 hour up to now)
I mocked up the platform using strips of 1/4 panel and hot glue and transferred this to a 1/2 sheet of 5/8" birch plywood and cut it out. I put a piece of 2x4 wood across the compartment where the spare tire used to be and bolted it to the body using the bolts that fasten the black "D" rings in the back and put the "D" rings in the bag of parts. I then covered the sheet of plywood with the commercial grade rubber covering and then bolted the plywood sheet to the body using the rear seat bolts and mounting points (a PIA but doable) and self tap SS screws screwed into the rear 2x4.
I was going to hide the fasteners under the rubber sheet but by exposing them I can remove the bedsheet in a matter of minutes using a screw gun.
It took me about 8 hrs to fabricate this and that is while I answered my phone, got lunch, etc. Cost was 56 bucks for plywood, and 60 bucks for the rubber sheet, and some misc. fasteners.
I can put the car back to stock in a couple hours if needed.
Right now I have a 24,000 btu air handler and a set of tires for my BMW GS in the back of my worker "B" as well as two tool bags and a can of R-22 freon.

Oh, and PS the car lost over 40lbs in this operation..you won't believe how much the rear seat back assembly weighs.

Awesome! Thanks for that write up. I'm convinced now since nothing was permanent. I'll be setting mine up like this for summer to use as my mobile airplane hanger. It would make it easier to load multiple larger RC planes into my car. I have one plane that is 90" long and I can't fit my other 78" long plane with it currently. This would probably make it work thouhg.
Thanks again, and good job.

78" is long. But if the wings come off (I'm sure they do) it will fit. One big advantage of this set-up is now the front seats fold totally flat because of the decreased height of the bed. I am able to carry 8' long boards with the passenger side seat down.
