Default my box is rusting already

when you open the rear hatch all the way.. if you look at where the hinges are, there are rust spots forming near the hinges and even on the flat metal area where it's painted. i have like 20,000 miles on it, it shouldnt be rusting. can i bring this in as a warranty item?

All the dealer is gonna do is remove the hinges and apply touch up paint over the areas that are starting to rust. The rust is forming around the areas that were left bare metal (hinges and such) that were not painted prior to assembly. They painted it afterward so there are areas that are bare. The recent salt spray from the winter is starting this rust process.

Technically, the warranty is against "rust-through." There needs to be perforation.

However, IMO, it's a good idea to get it on your dealer service record that you brought the car in this early with rust complaints. Not only might they do something about it (after all, if it's just surface rust, sanding and painting *is* the fix), but it might help you later if you have unusually serious rust issues.

Take it to the dealer. It's covered under warrenty. By box had some rust on the front driver and passenger doors. It was covered and they worked on it.

yeah, it is rust/corrosion protection. it doesn't have to be rusted through. rust is corrosion or oxidation of metal. take it and make sure they do a damn good job. maybe have a body shop or something get a second opinion, or a body shop authorized to do warranty work.

honestly, rdclark, do you really think toyota would tell you that they won't fix your box until they can see daylight through it?

Here's your warranty: http://www.scion.com/assets/media/pd...arranty_06.pdf

If you can find any mention of corrosion coverage other than perforation, I'd love to see it.

perforation is defined as the act of perforating, or to make your way through something. corrosion perforation in this case meanst aht oxidation is penetrating through a part of the car. if my scion started rusting and i went to the dealership and showed them, do you think they would say come back when there is an entire hole? corrosion is only going to go deeper and spread wider. toyota/scion would repair it if it is within the 60 month/unlimited mileage

so i think just made my point. the only things that can really rust are some underbody parts that get hot and are exposed to road salt all winter long.

"A rust or corrosion warranty protects you from rust-through problems with the sheetmetal. Surface rust doesn't count."

http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpconta...4/pageNumber=1

You can make all the "points" you want, but the dealer's obligation is defined by what the warranty actually says. Some dealers will go out of their way to satisfy their customers (despite the rabid anti-dealer sentiment on SL, it's true)... but the warranty doesn't cover surface rust, and that's a fact.

^^^^ He speaks the truth about this but some "nicer" dealers will do it to make their customers "happy".

^^^I agree, if you are on good terms with your Dealer, they will more than likely take care of you as a courtesy.

better get to waxing your car. I had the rust proofing done on the hinges and doors. No rust for me. but waxing heavily will slow that down a lot.
