gas mileage will be similar to the tC. while some of us thought the gearing would be Camry like which would make it too lazy for both auto and manual, i'm actually happy they kept the tC ratios that are closer.

i got a chance to drive the manual for the first time yesterday and was very impressed by the shift and clutch action. the 123 shifts were very direct where it flows freely into the gear slots without any tension which the 1st gen exhibited at times. i even managed to heel toe d/c rev match the car 3rd to 2nd and on certain turns 2nd to 1st and again very impressed by the clutch shifter action. the cars stock suspension can handle 7/10 driving but the steering was slow to respond but how many B owners will take their car to streets of willow or palomar mtn.

i came away equally impressed by the suspension tuning when we went over the simulated bumps. sitting in the front or back the bumps were very muted and a lot has to do with longer and wider chassis. the occupants are farther away from suspension mounts and joints that it will make the new B a great freeway tourer.

they used the tC gearing, ouch. I forsee some poor mileage #'s. They should of at least used the Camry 5spd auto.

Rich, where did you get this info?

when you attend scionbackstage they will provide you with a guide booklet and near the very last pages will show the ratios for both manual and automatic.

we were already expecting it when we found out that the 2AZ was going to be the motor but i wouldn't say bad just a little above average. the B1 had A- gas mileage this will be more B-. :P i have a feeling this car will average out at 25mpg with a mix of city and freeway driving and 25 is a lot better than 15 to 18. plus it does have a bigger tank so fill ups won't be as often.

and for those who feel that the B1 had enough power like i've said before, its ok with one person but start adding 2 or more people and it starts to struggle. during the backstage drive we had 4 people in the car and the auto still managed to chirp the 1-2 shift in manumatic mode.

Took me forever to find it, but the Camry gears are the same, except final drive. Final in the Camry is 3.94 vs. 4.235 in the xB. Ohh well; I can still hold on to the unreasonable dream that Toyota will pull something out with tuning and squeeze a 26/36 (2008 rating)...but I know I will be wasting my time. Unless they do change the tuning and pull something, I peg the mileage at about 20/28 (2008 EPA), or 23/31 (2007 EPA) +-1mpg.

umm If i'm not being dense, does this mean the auto cruises at lower revs than the manual in top gear?

Overall reduction in top gear with the auto is ~2.80. Overall reduction with the manual in top geat is ~3.10, so yes, the manual will run about 10% higher RPM on the highway.

i'm buying it. I still have feelings for my gen 1 box, but the new one just has better stuff...i only drive 20 miles a day so i don't care about the mileage much.
