...a different amplifier perhaps?
Give us a little more info on what you are using and we might be able to help.
You could try using transformers to alter the impedance at each channel, thereby reducing the power output by the amplifier.

The simple answer to overpowered speakers is to buy new speakers that'll handle more power. Without knowing what's in your system or the symptoms you are experiencing it's hard to tell if you are really overpowering them or underpowering them. Sometimes the sound is the almost the same.

Definitely get new speakers for the front. There are several options. You can get a component set and mount the woofers in the door and the tweets in the dash which is my setup. You can get mids for the door and a 4 inch two-way for the dash. You can get two ways for the doors and nothing in the dash. You can put two ways in the door and the dash. For all of those options other than just two-ways in the door you'll need L-pads or resistors to lower the level of the whatever's in the dash. Being that high up and reflecting off the glass will make them much louder compared whatever's in the doors.

to clarify, you will need a capacitor for the front speakers in the dash if you go with a 4 incher as that will stop the heavy bass from blowing them out. If you get a set of woofers and tweeters, it will come with a crossover. From an accoustical perspective, you want the tweeter as close to the woofer as possible, but then your knee hears it just fine. And the guy before had it right, the tweet in the dash may be a little bright.

Whatever you prefer. Go to a store and listen to everything you can. It will not sound the same as it does in the car but you'll be able to tell the differences and get a good idea of what you want.

I've seen post after post here about what brand of speakers to get. What it really boils down to is your ears and your budget. If you like it, buy it.

Don't be afraid to try things unless you have a very strict budget. In my box I'm using Dayton 7" mids and Vifa 1" aluminum dome tweeters with recycled MB Quart crossovers. The whole setup cost less than $130 because the crossovers were recycled from an old set. It sounds pretty nice to me.
