Default Dual 10" Stealth Sub Box similar to Golden86's....

First off, thanks to Golden86 for introducing his idea to us. When I first saw that a few months back, I knew I had to have one. I have a big box in the back that takes up valuable trunk space. Unfortunately, he wasn't interested in making another and I haven't seen anyone else attempt it. My brother has been making hockey goalie masks for years and works with fiberglass, carbon fiber and kevlar all the time, so I got some help from him on the basics. When Golden86 said his took 30 hours, I don't doubt it. I'm sure I spent at least that much time. It doesn't look difficult, but the mold, the measurements, the MESS, all of it was a pain in the @$$. But now that it's done, I know it can be duplicated much quicker and easier.

Some shots outside and in the car. It's a very tight fit. It's SOLID too. There was a very slight vibration with the subs hitting, but I put a tiny foam (1/8" thick) pad under it and now it's rattle free.

***UPDATE 5/8***

I sanded it down to be smooth so I can give it to the shop to make a proper mold. While I had that done, I went wild and sprayed it in a metallic red. Looks pretty hot now.

I know there's been a lot of interest once Golden86 first showed off his. If you guys like this and want one, let me know. If there's enough interest, I can get a bunch made. Mine works and I love it, but it's a first time thing, so it's a little sloppy. I don't own a router so the holes were hand jigged. There's things here and there that I'd do slightly different next time. And if enough of you want one, I can have a local cabinet shop cut the wood perfectly for me so they'll all be nice and clean.

I can do them for $225 each, not including the cost of the subs, obviously. It's solid and has some weight, so shipping would be roughly $15-30 depending on where you are located in the country.

I'm working on the left side now! That's a lot smaller and more complicated, but now that I've accomplished the right side, I'm amped to try something else. I'll post shots of the left after done in a week or so if it comes out properly.

I'm in Torrance, CA, so if anyone is local and wants to come by and check it out, let me know. If others are interested in buying these, I'd really like someone with nothing modified in the trunk area to come by and let me test fit one. I have dynamat in that area, so I'm curious how different it sits when it's lower by a bit.

What do you guys think?

Nice job, you will love all the extra bass with none of the loss in space ( kinda rhimes)

Did you brace the inside of the box? if not, that rattleing you hear is probably the back of the box flexing out and smacking the floor of your trunk. I had the same problem, and I braced the inside of the box, and no more rattles.

Im glad someone is going to make these boxes, because I have been SWAMPED with PM's about it. I don't mind helping people, or answering questions, but I hate to tell them no.

Once again, nice job

Hey Golden, thanks. I don't think it's flexing because it's pretty damn solid. Before I put the subs in, I pressed down inside with all my weight and couldn't flex the bottom. It's one layer of glass and 2 layers of mat fiber. My brother said it's as stiff as it's going to get and I believe it. There's a very small gap at the bottom corner though (i can feel with my finger), so I think it's just vibrating there. Something to take up the gap will do it.

I love it though! Have you attempted the left side? It's obviously smaller than the right, but I think totally do-able. The "lip" will extend over the tire a bit, but not enough to make it impossible to remove the tire without taking the box out first. I'm going to give it a try and see how it turns out.

I had 4 layers of glass mat and 1 layer of glass cloth, and mine flexed like crazy till I braced it.

I want to keep my other foam peice on the left side for all my spare tire tools, and I really don't need one more sub, 2 is enough for me.

I would pull your box out of the car and play it, you can see if the box is flexing ot not.

I'm pretty sure I can get two more SQ10s on the left. The design is going to be a bit different than the foam currently over there and it'll extend a bit over the tire, but not to the point where you'd have to remove it to take out the spare. So then you'd have 4 SQ10 subs AND the spare still in there.

I took it out of the car and checked and no, it's definitely not flexing. I put a small 1/4" piece of foam under the bottom left corner and rattle free. I was going to put some dynamat on the bottom of the box, but my car already has it on the inside, so it'd just be overkill. The foam worked perfectly to take away the small gap. I was playing with the settings and man, this thing kicks.

Pretty sweet....

Like I said in the post, I could do it for $300, not including the cost of the two SQ10 subs. I'm working on the left side right now, but am going to do another of this one to work out all the little things I wanted to do differently including taking time to sand it and make it all "pretty" like nebster said.

AWESOME JOB!!! well when you start selling let me know cuz ill for sure buy one from you as soon as i get some extra $$$

but i got some questions too... did you just fiberglass over the foam or how do you make a mold or apply the fiber glass b.c ive never fiberglassed also why is it that people can fit 2 subs in the fiberglassed box but only one in wood/partical board?

if you can mass produce it and make it like cost a little less with discount for like scionlife members or whatever it would be great cause $300 is pretty pricey for a box

For a custom fiberglass box, I think $300 is a fair price. If it was fully finished, sanded smooth, and painted nicely, thats what you should expect for a fiberglass box.

I'll have to get my costs together and see what I can do. $300 was just a starting point. I based it on the fact that ED's box that fits one SQ10 goes for $150. I'll try to shoot for a $200-$250 cost. How about I start an interest list and see how many people want one. Obviously, the more that buy, the larger amount of materials I can purchase at once to get them even cheaper.

I'll have pics of the left side dual box posted by Wednesday. I'll post another thread advertising both at that time to see how cheap I can put these things out for you guys.
