Do the Pioneer units share their internals with any of the retail Pioneer units. I hope they at least use the Supertuner IIID radio reception circuitry. First thing I will do is replace the 12" antenna with a 31" antenna to improve FM and AM reception.

I wouldn't expect to see that much of a change with a huge antenna, other than it being silly. Throw an s2k on there and call it a day.

Also, the current model head units have three settings for the SSP acoustics, they are accessible for each model. I don't see why they'd take that away.

May I suggest attaching some form of lights to such a gargantuan antenna :)
