Just tossed in the better than the tc part to get more people looking haha, however some points of the xd brakes are better... . But the whole rear drum thing is the most stupid thing toyota could have done for the car stopping wise.

Anyways being a 5 lug I thought I would go over the XD's brakes in detail tonight.

After a few hundred miles of driving, the XD brakes IMPRESSED the heck out of me. Downright scary how hard they grab somtimes.

Long story short I have a complete set of oe tC calipers & rotors laying around so I decided to compare.

BOTH XD AND TC ROTORS = 11.8"

XD ROTOR THICKNESS = 22MM
TC ROTOR THICKNESS = 25MM

XD PISTON DIAMETER = 57MM
TC PISTON DIAMETER =52MM

BOTH XD AND TC ROTOR WEIGHT = 14LBS

XD HAS A LOT MORE SURFACE AREA PAD WISE THAN THE TC, SEE PICS BELOW.

So overview, the xd caliper has a much larger piston. The rotors are the same diameter, the xd's are slightly thinner.

So, Can you swap tC brakes onto the xD bolt on wise? Notta. Caliper bracket bolt holes do not line up / caliper brackets are quite a bit different! Also why bother, the XD caliper setup is superior on paper to the tC.

Now can you use the tC rotor with the xD caliper? Notta, rotors offset is different so the rotor hits the caliper bracket.

All in all there is 0 reason to change out the front brakes on the xD. They are PLENTY for a car that weighs in at 400+lbs less. No wonder they stop so darn hard for stock.

I always thought the brakes in my tc were kind of squishy. After driving my gf's xd and my gen2 I know they were. The xd definitely has some grippy brakes for a small car. I have also noticed this with several other smaller toyota models, such as the matrix and corolla. I didn't like the pedal feel on the corolla or matrix though, it was soft at first then you hit a point and bam they grip hard out of nowhere. I like the stock brakes in the gen2, but eventually will swap out the rotors/pads/lines. How are you liking the xd otherwise Jeremy? I like riding in/driving in my gf's xd every once in a while, but it would be too small for me to be my daily driver.

Love the xD, it is my new daily. Gas milage is great, Averaging 35mpg right now. Plenty of room for me. Power is better than expected but far from great. Midrange torque is suprising. Love it so far!

hmmm...curiously...what are the stopping distances for the tc and the xd??? that would be a good comparison for this thread.

Stopping distance on the xd will not be as good as the tC even if the brakes were far better. Give them EQUAL tires and I feel the xD will outstop the tC naturally from the weight difference alone.

Stock tire size = 195/60 R16
0 - 30 (sec): 2.8
0 - 45 (sec): 5.3
0 - 60 (sec): 8.4
0 - 75 (sec): 13
1/4 Mile (sec @ mph): 16.5 @ 84.0
30 - 0 (ft): 31
60 - 0 (ft): 123


Stopping ditance on the tC

Stock tire size = P215/45ZR17
0 - 30 (sec): 2.9
0 - 45 (sec): 4.8
0 - 60 (sec): 7.2
0 - 75 (sec): 10.1
1/4 Mile (sec @ mph): 15.7 @ 88
30 - 0 (ft): 29.54
60 - 0 (ft): 119.55

Also to note, it would not take a lot to make the xD faster than a stock tC which would really be fun to drive!

tC curb weight 2905lbs
xD curb weight 2625lbs

From the looks of things I can shave off around or close to 100lbs off the xD from just the following...
- Lightweight wheels and tires, 20-28lbs savings

- Eliminate the spare / jack, carry a small electric pump & tire repair kit. 35lb savings

- Replace stock batter with 6lb braille battery = 34lb savings

Just with those quick mods, I will be at 89-97lb savings which cuts me down to 2536-2528lbs!!!

Now if we go off stock power to weight ratio...
160hp for the tc = 18.15lbs per hp
128hp for the xd = 19.75lbs per hp

Now most tC's stock dyno is approx 140whp which = 20.75lbs per WHP
The xD is coming in at 120whp which = stock 21.06lbs per WHP

Now with the mods another company has found that netted 145whp, I personally feel I can acheive 140whp with my own tuning in which I will not replace the stock intake manifold. If I can get her to 140whp @ 2528lbs I would be at...18.05lbs per whp.

Now at 18.05lbs per whp, that would equal the power to weight ratio of a 160whp n/a tC which comes in at 18.15lbs per whp. Of course of the tC goes through the same weight reduction as my xd plans, the balance of power shifts to the tC of course.


Class over haha :)

So all in all the xD can be a fun MPG toy and be as quick as a stock tC which is not fast, but not slow either.

did you look to see how hard it would be to swap the rear drums over to the tc discs - even if you swaped over the caliper brackets and all other mounting hardware?

I put the Konig Feather's I had on my tc on my gf's xd, I believe they weigh in at 17lbs a piece. Made a huge difference on my tc, 3mpg more and made it feel a little more responsive off the line. I don't know what mpg difference in made on the xd, but it definitely makes it feel more nimble.

I did not check the rears for the tc rears as the rear end of the tc is totally different. The 09 corolla XRS is my #1 choice to look at for a rear disk swap.
