If you just bought your xB2 then it should already have synthetic in it and you won't need to change your oil till 5,000 miles. That's the recomended mileage anyway.
A lot of people however will tell you that at your 1,000 mile mark, change the oil. Then get on a regular schedule (if you're sticking with synthetic, that'd be every 5,000 miles). The reason for the first change at 1,000 miles is to clear out any possible metal shavings that may be left after the engine's first break-in period. This is arguable though as Scion and most car manufacturers these days supposedly break in the engine relatively well in the first place and there shouldn't be a need to do it yourself... but we're all entitled to our own opinions.
If ya got the time and money, change it at 1,000 and get on a schedule of every 5,000 after that... if you don't have the money to spend on a possibly helpful/possibly meaningless $45'ish oil change, go for it. |

| I just changed the filter at 500 miles. I cut it open, and it was kinda sparkly, so I'm glad I did. Wix replacement filter ftw. |

It says 5000 miles OR 6 months. I went 10 months before I hit 4400, and you could feel the engine wanting new oil. I think 6 months would have been perfect.
I'm going to go with 6 months, which means about every 2500~3000 miles. |

Didn't change the oil, just changed the filter. The oil is still good, but the filters is whats keeping it clean and collecting a lot of the metal bits. (As evidenced by the sparkly bits in the filter oil) |

^^ Can someone confirm that?
I was planning to do oil change @ 1K. I was thinking about going to my Toyota dealer to purchase thier Toyota 5w20 Synthetic oil.... maybe the same stuff for break-in?

If changing just the filter, how much of the original oil comes out with the filter? How much oil did you put back in? if any? |

| I just had mine changed yesterday at 5200 miles and 6 months. THat and tire rotation are free (and at 10,000 and 15,000 miles). She didn't specify what type of oil, just said Toyota oil and filter. |

5k miles, or 6 months, whichever comes first. |

Check your manual before posting on here.
The xB does not com with synthetic oil and it is not necessary to use unless you are heavily modding your engine. Near the back of the users manual lists the oil requirements for the xB.
The guy that turned me onto the xB is a performance engine mechanic and even he said that synthetic oil for the xB was a complete waste of money.
Knock yourself out if you have the cash to blow, wont hurt it, but completely unnecessary with the stock or even partially modded engine. |

In the manual, it states we should use 5W20 or 0W20, PREFERRED use of 0W20. Well, 0W20 is ONLY available as a synthetic. Doesn't exist as conventional.
Therefor, Scion wants us to use synthetic... You just have to read more closely to find out what our cars REALLY want! :lalala: |

Well, when I said to check the manual I was referring to the oil that comes in the xB from factory not being synthetic.
And since you sounded so confident, I decided Ok, maybe I was wrong, so i decided to double check.
"Geniune Motor Oil is used in your scion vehicle. Use Scion approved Genuine Motor Oil or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity. "
Grade: ILSAC multigrade engine oil.
Recommended oil viscosity. SAE 5w-20 OR OW-20. " (this does not say that OW-20 is recommended over OW-20) (pg. 263)
HOWEVER. I will agree that it does state. "OW-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather."(pg. 241) Very general statement. Not scion or toyota specific.
This does not say that it is specific to what Scion wants us to use and you took the recommended statement out of context, you must be a politician. You can put words into Toyotas mouth all you want.
I simply stated that synthetic was not necessary to use, in which case I was absolutely right. Thanks for playing though.
Keep in mind as well that if you do not want to pay rediculous amounts of money for synthetic oil changes then I would not start doing it because you can not go back to conventional oil once to you synthetic. Not easily anyway. |

| I recently posted a topic about this. I wonder, when is the "best" time to change your oil for the first time? I hear so many numbers its hard to believe one. |

Because an oil filter is $5 or so. Isn't that cheap peace of mind? If $5 us a big deal, skip lunch and there you go, oil filter money. I did not, repeat, DID NOT change the oil, only the oil filter. The oil is still good, but I just wanted to change the filter since the initial engine break-in probably put a lot of junk in it. |
