ok so today I sanded down my rusted faded steelies and primed and painted em a fresh black, my camera is charging I will snag some shots when I can. One thing I attempted to do was paint a red lip on to them, they actually looked great but came out just a bit off due to the tape being impossible to get straight. It looked decent bu I ended up just painting it black again until I come up with a better idea how to do it right (flash cards around the steelie really helped) Anyone have any tips? I was hoping the final product could resemble this, minus the massive lip

(note this is not my box in pic)

You could always use a vinyl tape around the lip... that would be cleaner.

At the link you posted, if you scroll down and look at the pics of the completed rim before he put it back on the car he didn't do a perfect job either. The third pic from the left you can see an uneven edge, and red overspray on the tire & on the rim.

Unfortunately you are trying to mask on the inside of a curve, which is not the easiest thing in the world. A couple of suggestions, and I haven't tried any of these for this specific application so take them with a big grain of salt.

-Try reverse masking. Mask the tire, paint the lip red, then once the lip is dry, mask that off and paint the center of the rim. An example of this technique is here.

-See if you can find a round lid or container (garbage can, salad bowl, flower pot, etc.) that is just the right size to fit against where you want the inner edge of the lip to be. Mask with the flash cards, then have someone hold the round thing in place as your inner mask while you paint the lip. Be careful as shifting the round thing will cause an uneven circle or possibly smear the paint.

-Try using electrical tape. It has some stretch to it so you can sometimes get it to form curves better than masking tape. Make sure you have a pair of scissors to cut it with as trying to tear it will stretch it and likely ruin your masking job.

- Try using brush paint(One Shot makes some good stuff, call around to art supply places), and a foam brush (or a Macs pinstriping brush if you have the cash) . Leave the rim on the car, mask with the cards, then have someone spin the wheel slowly while you hold the brush to the lip, if you do it carefully you should be able to get an even edge all the way around.

thanks for the tips improbcat , I was thinking of getting my hands on a piece of oaktag and using a compass to trace a perfect circle and try and cut it out clean, I cant find anything around in the house to fit the perfect circle though . .

what about just spending a little money on some trim rings and then sand and paint them? i know this method wouldnt be as cheap.. but its not too expensive. and it would come out exact and take less time.

Those look HOT. You could do Rim Strips Tape. You can even get the stuff in red reflective. Looks great at night. I put some on my wifes motorcycle for safety.

My guess is vinyl considering it's a graphic place co. vehicle.
I'm considering painting the TRDs semi gloss black and putting reflective red rim strips on the 18s.
