I was having an issue with my 2004 Scion xB where whenever I tried to start the car, all the dash lights would come on, the radio, the AC, everything, but the engine would not turn over at all, and was pretty much silent. We found that by banging on the starter we were able to start it. Unfortunately that only bought us about a week, and then the car stopped starting all together. So we had the starter replaced yesterday afternoon, and it started right up. I probably started and drove the car 5 or 6 times between yesterday afternoon and this morning, and it started right up every time. Then, early this afternoon I tried to start it again, and it would not start. It did the same thing that it was originally doing - dash lights and A/C on, but silent engine and no start. I have checked the fuses and they are all fine...none of the lights or headlights turn off or go dim when I try to start it either. Any ideas? I am due to have a baby any day now so the idea of not having a car to get to the hospital is stressing me out! Thought we had it taken care of. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

2006 Scion xB - stock, no mods, 50K miles, daily commuter vehicle, no problems for 4 yrs...

so three weeks ago, my box starts shuddering and bucking all of the sudden. 25% loss in power, and it sounds like a go-cart when I accelerate. The "three stooges" came on, and it coded a "cylinder 1 misfire". I jumped online to see if I can get ideas on how to go about fixing the problem because I refuse to take it to the dealer. The main solutions I keep reading about are the 1)plugs and 2)coil packs.

As of now I have changed the plugs (all the old ones looked fine but I changed them anyway), and swapped the #1 and the #4 coil pack to see if I could get it to code for a different cylinder.... And it continues to code for #1 cylinder.

I also read that it could possibly be a fuel injector, and I might try putting a new one on the #1 just to cover all the bases. Compression test results hopefully will be updated soon (going to try to do it tonight).

This problem seems to be seriously frustrating for a bunch of people, and I rarely see a resolution to the forum posts on this topic. So I'm not the most mechanically inclined person, and I love my box, but the problem comes and goes. It will be fine one second and sputtering the next, and it will be great for a day or two and then start up again. Just when I think I've solved the problem it starts again. This is the family Box and I want to fix it before my wife decides she wants to trade it in. ;^) I could use any suggestions or advise.

Help me Scion family....your my only hope.
If the strainer needs to be changed, what material is the OEM pan gasket?

First, we've noticed a noise from the engine compartment. I'd describe it as "whirring with a hint of buzzing," like a cheap metal boxfan with old bearings or even like the engine noise from Mario Kart, but less electronic, of course.

It is related to engine RPM, not tire speed. Once we're going about 55 mph in 4th gear, the wind noise overwhelms it, but if I downshift to 3rd it is noticible again. This sound started maybe a month ago, I think.

Second, last week we had the three lights come on (Check Engine, VSC, Trac Off). The scanner said P0442 (Evaporative emission system, small leak or no flow condition).
A local shop said it was just a cap and filler neck problem, and is waiting on an estimate to replace the filler neck. My first question is: how much should replacing the filler neck cost?
My second question is: Could a vacuum leak up front cause the type of noise we're hearing?

This xB is a 2005 with about 140,000 miles. My wife is driving it over 1000 miles a week now for work, so we want to be preemptive if a fuel pump is about to die or something.

Thanks everyone. this is my first time posting, but I've gotten a ton of good info off this board over the years (including info on repairing my gate latch).

Hey viewers,

So here's my car's symptoms...
The other day, the battery light came on for a few minutes, then went off. Happened a couple of times that day.
The following day, same thing. Was driving home from work that morning, the battery warning light came on, then all warning lights came on, I started losing power, then the car died on me.
Later on that morning, I took out the alternator, had it tested at O'Reillys. It checked out OK.
I took the battery out next, had that tested, they told me it's ok too.
So now I'm wondering if there's a wiring issue. The cables look clean to the battery terminals.

I'm scratching my head, wondering what is draining the battery of power. I don't have any subs or anything outside of stock components. I'll check the ground wires and use some electrical component cleaner where I find them.

Any thoughts?
