those numbers are used to replicate the look of black and white FILM and adjusting curves/levels afterwards us just to suit your specific taste, increase brightness/contrast like using filters in the darkroom (though i highly doubt many of you know anything about that)

Use a "Gradient Map" adjustment layer to convert color images to black and white. You'll end up with a much better image to start your adjustments as opposed to just a channel mixer or B&W conversion in PS. And by "better" I refer to the amount of dynamic range in the image after the conversion. Some conversions "crush" blacks and whites of the image right away and you may not want that.
