Cool a-mendoza build 400-500whp soon to come - Update 4/11/11 - First time at the track

Update (4/11/2011)
Well i hit the track Saturday night to see what the tC would do with the current setup and here are the results. Best time of the night:
Reaction: .3310
60ft: 2.375
1/8 ET: 9.451 @ 80.20MPH
1/4 ET: 14.245 @ 103.39MPH
Kinda disappointing numbers with all the money i have thrown in it but i guess it did better than what i expected with its current condition. My tC was on street tires and only runnin 10psi on the current setup on 91 pump gas. What made my times suffer was i still have yet to put down a good race tune and i have a few boost leaks that are kinda getting bad from my IC pipes. Ill be getting my pipes fixed soon and after ill spend a few hours trying to get a nice tune put down. Then ill hit the track again and see if i can at least break mid 13's this time still on 10psi, 91 pump gas, and street tires.

More pics to come so stay tuned

All pics and videos of the build are on the first post for easy finding.

Well i’ve seen some of you guys with your own build threads and decided that i would start my own. I’ve read thru a few build threads and i got to say that some of the stuff ya guys do makes me kinda jealous. Anyways I’ve owned my tC for almost 2 years and it has come a long way but the real building is just about to begin.
Well here is a quick rundown on my car since I bought it so ya can know a little background about its history.

My journey to my boost addiction
--At first I had the intentions of building a show car with a few bolt ons to pick up a little speed. That all changed though once I started losing a few races and wanted more speed. Eventually I ended up getting addicted to boost and my wallet ended up going all down hill from their.
-- My first setup I ran for about a year was with intake, headers, exhaust, and a 75 shot of nitrous. Everything was all good and I was satisfied with the speed the tC had with my mods but once all my friends started upgrading to faster cars, I got left in the dust. I then changed the jets to my kit and started running a 100 shot of nitrous to just keep up. But as soon as my friends started moding their cars a little bit, I was left in the dust again. My EGT’s were getting really hot as it was with a 100 shot and I knew I would be asking for trouble if I tried to turn it up to 125 shot so instead I did the next best thing……BOOOOOST!!!
-- My next setup was to strip off the basic bolt ons and go for boost. I did a bunch of research here on SL with power goals of about 300whp and the Dezod S1 kit seem to be my best bet for not to bad of a price. I started with 8.7psi and later boosted up to 11psi on a precision 5031E turbo that came with my Dezod kit. I smoked just about every tuner car out in my location and it made me feel like top dog great. Talking about mad respect in my area from other guys from how fast I made the car just with a turbo bolt on kit. Well I blew the turbo seals on the turbo in just 3 months. Had to go back to N/A for about a month while my turbo got rebuilt. Then I was boosted again and in 2 weeks the manifold cracked. Took it off again and got it re-welded. 2 more weeks and then the studs stipped out from the head to manifold. Bought some extended head studs from Dezod and resurfaced the manifold cuz It warped when the studs striped. Boosted about another 4 months and once again I blew the turbo seals. This time I left it with blown seals for about a month and then one night I went to the track and nearly blew my engine. I was redlining in 3rd gear and was going to shift into 4th and instead I hit 2nd. First time I ever downshifted in any car without meaning to. Well no motor damage luckily but I wore down the engine pretty bad by doing it.
--Because of the engine ware I did, I’m back to N/A but all stock with just exhaust system for the last 4 months but that’s all about to change.

New setup for 2010-2011
My plan now for this year is to run a custom turbo setup on a built motor from Dezod and break into the 400’s or maybe 500's on 91 octane fuel. I would build the motor myself but I don’t want to risk doing anything wrong plus I don’t have a machine shop that I can fully trust with a race motor so ill just let dezod deal with my bottom end work. Hope my build goes better than some of the others Iv read about. Any advice or encouragement would be much appreciated as I don’t want to throw all this money into my car and it go out in under a year. If I screw up this time, its back to N/A for me and probably time to move on to another car. Here’s what im planning on running to break into the 400-500‘s on 91 octane fuel. Let me know what ya think about this setup.

Pics of my engine build:

Day 1
(6/24/2010)
For the first day of the project build i got rid of everything that was in the way to get the motor out. This included the hood, bumper, radiator, a/c compresser, intake, exhaust components, power steering, etc.

Day 2
(6/26/2010)
For the secound day of the project build i needed to loosen the motor mounts, pull the axles out, get the engine wiring harness discounected, and finally pulled the motor out. I ended up accidentaly puncturing the a/c condenser so a new one is in order. Looks like ima have to recharge the a/c system when its all done.

Day 3
(7/1/2010)
For the third day of the project build it was time to tear down the engine. First step was to get the engine off the cherry picker and onto an engine stand. I first pulled off the tranny and clutch system. Then i stripped off the wirring harness, intake mani, pulleys, timing chain system, and cams. All thats left is to drop the oil pan, and crack open the head.

Day 4
(7/3/2010)
After some hard work today the motor is finally down to the bare block. I also got some of the old stuff from the used head transfered over to the new head. Also got some cleaning done to the parts im reusing but their is still a bit of cleaning left to do. Also found today that my intake manifold is broken internally. Gonna have to replace this too.

Day 5
(9/9/2010)
Took about 2 months after Day 4 to get the block machined, bored, aligned, etc. so this whole time ive done nothing but wait. Today i took my old block off the engine stand and put it in a crate. Then i placed my new block on the engine stand. I was able to install the lower crankcase and oil pan along with the secondary timing chain setup, oil pump and finally ARP head studs. This is were i started having problems. The new studs would not go all the way down. After no luck i gave up for the day but hopefully i will have a solution for it by the next build day.

Day 6
(9/11/2010)
Well today after 4hrs of messing with the stud holes to try and get the ARP studs to fit i finally got them. After that I spent the rest of the day getting the whole motor assembled. All thats left is to bolt on the tranny and its ready to drop in to my car.

Day 7
(9/16/2010)
Well Day 7 has come and gone and here's the results. The motor was finally takin off the engine stand and onto the shop crane. Installed the new clutch setup and tranny and finally droped the motor into the car. Took all day to get everything settled in. All that is left is the intake, battery, and fluids. I was gonna finish the touch ups today but was just to tired so looks like ill have to wait till Day 8 to finish.

Day 8
(9/18/2010)
Well Day 8 is here. Finished up the little touchups today. Got the intake on, battery good to go, gear oil in the tranny, engine oil in the motor, coolant in the colling system, and finally finished wiring the new Spal slim fans. Primed the engines oil system and finally was ready to start. I nearly ____ my pants when i started it. It ran horribly. Car was randomly misfiring in all 4 cylinders and my AFR's were off the chart lean. I diagnoised all the ignition system to see if that was the problem but everything checked out good. Then i finally noticed that my vacuum gauge was only reading 10in/hg when it should be reading colse to 20. I looked around and sure enough found the problem. The culprit was a disconnected brake booster line. I hooked it up and like magic the car started running great. Well all thats left is to break the motor in and start the turbo build so that raps it up for the Engine build. Hoped you enjoyed the journey. Stay tuned cause turbo build is next. Pics of the final results soon to come.

Some vids for your viewing pleasure:

Good set uo! Yiou should get 2.75 piping at least you never have to upgrade! I got it and looks amazing and made a huge difference. Your set up is sort of like mines except for I don't have LSD! I'll trade you my turbo for your LSD and cash. Hhehehehe

Hahaha no thanks for the offer man. The LSD is already installed to a brand new never used transmission so all i need to do know is install onto a new engine. Plus i can see it being a good advantage to my build for trying to get the power to the ground with the newly found power.

As for the piping, is 2.75" what you really need to do the blow thru set up? I like the idea of 2.75" but would that throw a code since the factory pipe is a 2.5"?

No it will not throw a code. And I already have a blow thru set up.

sweet i guess i may have to try it. 2.75" piping it is. Some pics of your blow-thru setup would be nice so i can throw it in a similar location. You didnt reduce the piping ID to 2.5" were the MAF sensor is at did you? I here running a different size piping will throw the code.

Unfortunantly the last time i was at the track was about 4-5 months ago. Dont have any time slips handy and to top it off, it would only display 1/8 mile times. They just recently did some work at my local track to now read 1/4 mile times as well and well im no longer racing for now.

Cool. Ill definently give it a shot then. Having them bigger pipes could call for less restriction less boost loss and cleaner looking engine bay.

thats what im hoping for myself. I so bad want to do it now but taking my time and doing it right the first time is better than having to take several attempts. ive been riding stock for too long now. I cant even remember what boost felt like anymore. Going from stock to 400whp is going to be really fun. Hope i can control the newly found power.

Really? Your gona have to let me know who that is or find me a pic or something. Cant take credit and say im the first one to do it if someone else had previously done it.

Oh yea dont really remember how long ago it was since i did this mod but its been awhile. I even took a bunch of pics of the whole process of me making the bumper so i have proof that i did it and not had it made for me.
