Review of Stock Exhaust vs. Tsudo Exhaust.
Thaaaaanks man!
So I guess I'll start off the morning with my first 'update'
Some of you may know that I recently took off and sold my Tsudo. It's new owner should be receiving it today/tomorrow.
Anywho this was as a result of a run-in with a police officer and a safety repair order that I was issued for an 'illegally modified exhaust'. I could have easily gotten it signed off by a repair shop because I still had a cat, muffler, and used proper exhaust hangers. However, the loudness of the exhaust and the way it resonated in the cabin under load had grown quite old to me. I figured I would use this as a good excuse to go back to stock.
How about a review of this experience?
Upon cranking the car, I was almost stunned/disturbed at how eerily quiet the car was!...even WITH the Takeda intake I still have under the hood. I could still hear the throaty sound of the intake under load...but otherwise it sounds beautifully quiet.
Keep in mind, I still have the rigid Torque Solution exhaust hangers. They don't seem to transmit any irregular vibrations from the stock exhaust to the car.
When I went to drive the car for the first time I was pleasantly surprised by how much more responsive it was at the bottom end. It takes noticeably less pedal travel to get the car to move and accelerate. It made me feel like putting the stock exhaust back on was an upgrade!
What's more?...I'm getting better gas mileage. I can attribute this to not having to press the gas pedal as much to get the car to move from a stop and accelerate.
All of that is nice and all, but let's not forget that a 2.5" exhaust does actually have some benefit too. Yeah it kind of wrecks your bottom end, but the power and throttle response you feel above 3500-4000 rpm is definitely more lively. With my automatic transmission, when I would want to pass I give the pedal a quick jolt and it downshifts and the car does it's thang. With the Tsudo, this downshift happened quickly and I was pressed back into my seat pretty decently. With the stock, this downshift seems to happen slower and the acceleration is mildly softer and smoother. Also when cruising at highway speeds (65 mph and higher), accelerating power seems more readily available with the Tsudo. Going from 65 to 85 requires less effort with the Tsudo and often doesn't even require a downshift from 6th gear.
And I won't bother reviewing the sound of the Tsudo vs. Stock sounds with words...I made a video for that awhile ago:
All-in-all, putting the stock exhaust back on was a good move for me. Like most of us here, my ride is a daily driver and the noise of the Tsudo at 6 in the morning heading to work is a bit much. I also spend the bulk of my time below 3500 rpm and driving on streets with stop lights, so I am VERY refreshed at having that power back.
I've got a used TRD axleback that should be delivered in a few hours. My hopes are that it doesn't really change performance. All I want is a more aggressive tone while keeping my bottom-end. We'll see! I'll make a video comparing it to exhaust once I get it on.
