Default Is buying a Scion xA with about 100,000 miles a good idea?

Hello. I'm looking at buying a used Scion xA for my first car. However, the ones with the lowest prices have the higher mileage. For example, a 2004 Scion xA with 100,000 miles is going for under $5000 on Craigslist.

My price range is under $7000, but it would be best if I could save more money.

I know that Toyotas in general have hyper-good reliability, and since Scions are made by Toyota, would it be a wise choice to buy a Scion with roughly 100,000 miles?

Personally, I don't think my dad would let me get a car with that high of mileage, so how could I convince him.

Well, on second thought, he's not buying the car, I am. I guess the better question is how could I justify my reasoning to buying a car with such high mileage?

What about 90,000 miles for roughly $6500?

I would hold out for either a 2005 or 2006 if you can.
Get a manual if thats what you want(many benifits with a manual, less weight, better mpg); however if you are getting something w/ 100K miles it might be close to needing a clutch :-(

I need an automatic because manuals are too difficult and distracting for me.

If it's in really good shape and for around 3k, then I'd say yes because there are xB's that have gone 200k+ with little to no problems.

100K miles for 7K, no way. There are and have been xBs selling for less then 10K$ and arond 60K miles.

The other thing to consider, the car is 5 years old .. which puts it in the ballpark of 25K miles a year? Still not good.

Unless you have all knowledge of how the car was treated, and only if you have a compression and sniff test done, then maybe buy the car for 3K$, maybe.

My concern is that your buying a high mileage car; average mileage for a car is 15K a year at the most, and if the engine decides to s___t the bed, you now out another 3K$ for an engine replacement.

If your in sunny FL. consider buying grandmas ( not necessarily your grandmothers ) older Chevy for a couple hundred. Cars down there generally dont have issues with road salt, potholes and lots of stop and go traffic. Buy yourself something older, but in good condition and use it for work/school transport and save for a couple years for a lovingly used Scion. My first car was a '78 Chevy Nova that i bought for a dollar! It lasted me 3 years.

100k miles is not that bad. The car isn't that old, mostly highway miles most likely.

If it is in good condition and you like it you shouldn't be worried about the mileage as long as the car has not been abused. Just get the car checked out by a reputable shop.

If you can save a lot of money by adding a few miles I'd buy it.

Apparently, Kelly Blue Book is saying that a 2004 Scion xA with 110,000 should run for about $7000.

Really?

Damn where are you guys finding Xa's in the 2-3k range?! I've been in the market for a little over a month and it seems that even salvage title xa's are going for 5-6k, clean title with 50-90k miles on them are going for 7-9k still. I'm in SoCal so there's a crap load of them, but everyone wants way too much for them right now. Anyways to stay on topic, I would say 100k is no problem as long as you give it a good look before buying (check service records, check all liquids, any oils spots around the engine, any noises when driving etc.. the usual stuff you would do with any car) or get it checked out at a mechanic's shop(they usually charge like ~60) good luck man.

I check craigslist in LA, OC, and SD several times a day and have never seen an Xa below 6k that was not a fake ad(email them, and they email you back a website for car auctions etc..). If you see one in SD for 2-3k drop me a pm

Offer $4,500. I recently bought a 2004 xB with 90k on it for $7,000, you can not find them cheap in the DC area. I did know the owner and the condition of the car was great, it actually drives and idles smoother than my 2006 xB with half the miles. The engine is solid, the only problems I had were the usual rubber bits (wiper blades, tie rod bushings) and for some reason the window washer fluid pump was cracked and not working so that needed replacement too.

mine has 103k on the clock. runs like a top still. just changed the sway bar bushing, and shocks no clutch yet. but for 7000? hecknooooo. mine kbbs at 5400ish with 103k miles. and in addition the xa is okay but its the bottom of the scion ladder with xb1 above tc and xb2 tied i think and xd idk how it is performing so far
