Default any gearing options 4k rpm going 80 on the fwy is killing me

so are there any gearing options out there? a taller 5th or even taller ring and pinion? i would be happy to drop my rpm to 3500 at 80. i do alot of open freeway driving in so cal (yea i know it all traffic out there) and would just like to turn to poor little engine a little slower but still keep up with traffic any options?

taller tires...your speedo will be off though so use a gps to get your actual speed.

The two most affordable solutions:

Slow down
Don't worry about it.

Just change the fluids regularly. The engine and tranny are designed to handle it. I'm at almost 120K with mine and I don't drive slow...

its annoying but i got used to it. The only cheap and easy solution is swap with an echo. I think the change is 600-700 rpm

...it was annoying at first, but then I realized that's the nature of the 1NZ.. do fluids on time, and other than getting used to it.. it will all be good.. taller gears, IMO, would suck the little life there is in the motor (for power)..

Anyone look at a Yaris gear box? They are geared a lot taller but I don't know if the shafts are compatible.

So to get the RPMs down, it will cost several hundred for a tranny, customizing of the mounting hardware, risk of incompatibility, voiding of warranty, possibility of less power/longer time to get to 80 since you're taking the motor out of the powerband, less responsiveness at 80 and questionable resale value because the RPMs seem high because you're comparing it to a completely different engine/tranny setup.

If it was turning at 6500-7K, it might make sense.

Re looking at my comment, refering to power, I should retract that part.. but anyway..

On a dyno I peaked at 6500.. I just imgine taller gears wouldn't be as "zippy"

From teh Scangauge reading of load it runs about 50% in top gear which is good for drivability. Taller gearing will reduce hill climbing and acceleration but if you are maintaining constant higher speeds the taller gearing will just reduce gas pedal response but you can always down shift to 4th which is about red line in a stock geared xB at 80mph.

Auto or manual? I had a xb1 for almost 3 years and I swear the rpm's at 80 were closer to 3500 rather than 4000.

An auto is geared taller - the manual would be turning about 4100+ rpm at 80mph depending upon tire wear and if not stock.

it is an 06 manual. resale value is not an issue i plan on driving this until we no longer use gasoline lol. i do plan on this car being my commuter for the next decade or so. i have found another engine for it as close to new as one could hop for that is now getting ready to be packed away for several years until it is nedded. i do understand that throttle response will diminish but that would be in 5th gear. the echo trans might be similar in 4th gear to my 5th so once off the line and moving i dont know that it would be all that different until 5th gear and the issue then would be throttle response for passing and hill climbing but then again there is always 4th gear. im up in the air about it but figured it wouldnt hurt to ask all of you for your input. so thanks for your time
