Default Humming noise..

06 Scion xB 134k 2"lowered and 17"wheels since it was a month old
My first guess was wheel bearings but before buying any parts I wanted to look at it
Upon inspection there is no play in the wheel up and down but with the car jacked up and on stands I started it and let it run in 3rd gear. The noise was very noticable at the driver wheel/ tire
Here's where the confusion comes in.
The axle to the driver wheel has to me a lot of play at the transmission.
A lot more than the passenger side.
The noise seems constant and doesn't change with acceleration or engine breaking and coasting.
All signs point to bad wheel bearing.
Is there a bearing inside the transmission for the axle and do you need to drop the tranny to get to it?

I replaced my buddy's axles at around 60k on his box from a humming noise but if I remember right it was more
noticeable under a load

Default Similiar problem

I am having almost the same problem with my 2006 xB (funny, I have 139,000 miles) only thing is its on my right front wheel and instead of being constant noise it does actually get louder as I accelerate especially on making left turns. I suspect that its the wheel bearing for sure and when I took it to a trusted repair shop the guy went in the car and just from the feel and noise he said it was the wheel bearing. Other possibility is the joint. I'm taking the car tomorrow to get the wheel bearing fixed then we shall see. Check the joint is my advice if you can

ilovemybox - To check to see if your wheel bearing is bad is not to check for play, that's how you check to see if your tie rod is bad. To see if your bearing is bad, you jack it up (with the car off, not on) and slowly turning the wheel with both hands and feel for it hanging up or dragging or grinding or "cracking", you will be able to feel it in your hands and might be able to hear it too.

Same for you keeboxxy, jack it up and do this and that'll tell you every time. Your mechanic is right.

Hi, I have a Scion xB 2004 with 189K Miles. I took my car to a car garage "specialist" in the past year. I was complaining about the humming noise that start after 60 miles/Hour speed and up.
The noise looks like come from the passenger side. I was told to replace the front bearings, struts, brake pads, front ball joints,

The CV Axle compete assembly $48.99.

Please let me know what can make a humming noise after the speed is 60 Miles /Hour and up? Thank you.
and new rotors.

1.I replaced the front bearings, and all what was needed from the first diagnostic. Then the noise come back again. I took the car to another car garage "specialist". There we found that the noise -clanking, is from the back bearings and rear brakes.
2. Was replaced all rear complete set. Brake cylinders, rear bearings, brake springs, rear shoes, new adjusters, new bolts.
After replacing with new tires Pirelli was done the alignment and tires balance.
Then was the same noise back again.
3. Recently the car was in other "car specialist" garage. Now, the diagnostic is that need the fixing/ replacing the CV Axle assembly.
There is no oil dripping, no damage gasket.
How come the rubber boot can make noise or get damage if on exterior is not a cosmetic problem???
Do I need all Axle assembly replaced? One for the left and one for the right side?
Please let me know if after this replacement the noise will be back again?

Thank you.

It is virtually impossible to diagnose any "noise" over the internet. Only a trained service technician with many years of experience can correctly diagnose odd noises. Otherwise you end up "throwing parts at a problem" -
which it sounds like you have been. And even if you happen to correctly diagnose what's causing the noise, putting cheap Chinese parts (even with free shipping) in may not solve the problem.
Take for instance that half shaft for under fifty bucks.
