Default How good is 3M tape for Vent Visors and Spoilers

01-28-07

Hey everyone and hope some one can help me.

I just got a Shadow Mica Box 2 months ago and love it. My ride looks kinda plain but just ordered some rims from pep boys like the one listed in the forum below (only 15's) though):

http://www.scionlife.com/forums/view...proline+wheels

I also plan on getting the bBist Type II Spoiler and some Rain and Windflectors for the windows. The question is both state there is no drilling required and are held by 3M double sided tape. How good is the adhesive for these? I'm afraid if I go through a car wash or if it snows or rains really bad here in Chicago they'll fall off.

Since these accessories are basically taping things onto your box if you have limited car technical know how would you install them yourself or would find a professional to do this stuff for you.

Please help because the box is ok looking but I'd like it to be a bit better.

Thanks

I would clean the areas well with over-the-counter alcohol and do it when its warmer out - you should be ok. I would recommended making sure its warmer so the adhesive can set onto the paint/sills.

Both the spoiler and window deflectors should hold on fine as long as you take the above precautions.

that 3M tape is very strong. I have my vent vent visors AND my OEM spoiler up with tape. many people snicker when i tell them about the spoiler, but it's been on almost a year with no problems whatsoever. I was very careful prepping the area, and used the same method window tinters use with the film when positioning the spoiler.

I have the Type II CF spoiler, and it's also held on with clips. It's not going anywhere, I can shake the whole car with it.

when I installed my spoiler, it was fairly warm outside.

I stripped the wax off the hatch with dish soap, and cleaned the area very very well. I ground down the tabs on the OEM spoiler underside, and covered the entire effective mounting surface of the spoiler with tape. I sprayed the mounting area down with 'tinter's spray'*, and got it all lined up and fit tight. Had a buddy hold it in place while i shot it with a heat gun to do most of the evaporation, then braced it up with painter's tape for 24h.

*when i say "tinter's spray" I am talking about a mixture of 1 drop dish soap per pint of water.

My fiance's ventvisor broke before the tape gave, so I'm guessing it's pretty strong.
