I know the jack points for the xB (notches in the little rails along the underbody) and the rear-center jackpoint.

However, where do you put jack stands?

I currently have one wheel off putting spacers on, and I put one stand just behind the rear-side jackpoint. It's been on the stand for about 10 hours, but will most likely be up in the air all night, too.

Is this safe?

Well, I guess you have to define "frame"? I have it on the "pinch" right behind the jackpoint. Is that considered the frame?

I use the rear-center jack point for just that. I jack the car up at that point and put the jack stands under the rails you were describing on each side of the car.

Yes, those grooves are in the frame rail. you can put a jack stand under the frame rail at any point along the bottom. The groves hold the jack in place in the best location for raising one corner of the car.
Under the car there is frame, body, cables and pipes.
You can jack and stand any location under the frame.
Jacking up the fender will just crumple the fender.
Pinching any electric cables can be expensive.

Look in the manual and it shows dots where NOT to put a jack. You should not put a jack anywhere on the rear suspension, i.e. the subframe and the swing arms. These are the traditional and most temping places back there, but a jack can distort them and affect the rear alignment.

It looks like you are limited to these places for jacking or jackposts:
1. The jack points on the side rails.
2. The front subframe behind the engine.
3. The rear center jack point.

I wonder if the side rails are strong enough to support one jack in the middle, i.e. use one jack to raise both wheels off the floor?

just don't use the rear torsion bar

It is a uni-body but there are frame rails so to speak. The square looking rails that run front to back is where you use a floor jack and for placing jackstands under. DO NOT jack from the middle (between both doors). It will kink or dent that rail slightly. Use either end as possible.

Scions use coil springs. They don't have "torsion bars".

Chevy trucks have torsion bars in the front and leafs in the rear. I think he meant the rear axle member on the xB and called it a torsion bar by mistake.

What ever you do, DON'T PUT IT UNDER THE REAR AXLE!!!!! I've seen an idoit did this on an Echo (Echo, xA, and xB uses the same suspension set up), and ended up beding the thing in the center.

Interesting...... been an ASE Auto tech for years and never bent a rear axle with a jack. My xB is also fine raising it with the jack on the rear axle

Try it in the middle of the axle beam. It will bend like a pretzel. It's only made from stamped steel.

Hmmmmmm... Most ASE techs check the manufacturer's warnings.

That 'thing' in the rear, between the wheels, is not an 'axle' but a formed sheetmetal suspension member. Bending it or deforming it in any way can affect rear-end alignment, which is non-adjustable...

I had new wheels put on my xB Monday. The guy at the tire shop - without any prompting from me at all - told me to never put a jack under the rear axle, but that the the underbody on these have a really solid 'pinch weld' area on both sides that takes jacking very well. *shrug*
