Default Burning oil

I was talking to Toyota service guy and he told me Toyota is doing a study on older 2nd gen xB's and how much oil they use. My 2008 doesn't need added oil in between changes but only have 57k on it.

How about you? Do you burn much oil in your older 2nd gen xB?

Default Help

I have an 07 Tc. Can you help?
I recently added oil to my high mileage 07 scion Tc (160k). I accidentally bought 5w50. Would this be a problem? I normally get it changed with 5w30?

yes that is way too thick. Drain out that thick ___ 50 weight and put in the right oil. Early TC's used 5W30 but later TC's all 2nd gen XB's and most any toyota now uses 5W20 or 0W20. There isn't a huge difference between 5W20 and 5W30. The only reason they did the change was because 5W20 is considered an energy conserving oil. I think 0W20 is like water and would never use it on anything. The " ALL AROUND" oil that's fine in most anything is 5W30. I doubt it caused any damage. Its a common debated topic on what brand oil or synthetic vs regular oil blah blah. Im an ASE certified mechanic and i was a toyota service tech for years. Ill tell you i prefer regular oil. The high mileage stuff is BS. Its gives no added protection. Synthetic is made from smaller molecules than regular oil thus the fact its a bit more slippery and is really made for high rpm performance motors with high heat. That being said when your motor gets older and the tolerances between piston rings and gaskets loosens you will consume more oil using synthetic due to the fact that it slips through areas that conventional oil does not. Just stick with a name brand regular 5W30.
