DIY Borla Exhaust Install ( PICS ADDED )
Ok guys i recently purchased a dual borla exhaust kit for my xb and decided to do my own DYI. I figured why not, there is different ways to do this install and it is not hard at all. So lets get started.
Here is what it looks like completed:
Heres pretty much what comes in the box.
Pipe assembly
2 bolts, 2 nuts
Hanger assembly-
First step is to remove stock exhaust. Start by removing two bolts and nuts i believe they are a 14mm and 15mm. I found it best to not completely take the nut of the bolt so it could support the exhaust while i removed the hanger. Also used a stand to support it.
Heres what it should look like:
Next remove the exhaust from the rubber hanger. They make a special tool for this but for us " Get er Done's " channel locks will work fine. DO NOT! use a screw driver or anything other than a specialty tool/channel locks. You will only frustrate yourself and damage the rubber isolator. Wd-40 or penetrating spray will help ease of removal.
Place the one end of the tool between the flange and rubber isolator. The other at the nose of the hanger. Like so:
Once the stock muffler is removed the next step is to install the new one. This will be done in two sections. Attach new assembly to the existing piping. Once this is done it needs to be torqued to manufacture spec's about 18-24 ft. lbs with a torque wrench. Im sure if you do not have one you can rent one from your local auto zone. Also attach it to the existing hanger, its a lot easier to put back than remove for the first timers. BTW i saw the problem with the spring in this pic already and have fixed it.
Next you should remove the rear tow hook, instructions say to install the other hanger followed by the second piece of piping. I found it a easier to install rubber isolator and hanger to the second piece of piping and then finish assembly. But i will show you pics of where they go so you get the idea.
Last step, Is to fit piping together and torque the clamp. It needs to be torqued to about 32-35 ft. lbs. Do not tighten the clamp until piping is fitted together and everything is correctly aligned.
So far i am very happy with my purchase. Exhaust has a nice low/ deep sound up to 3,000 rpms. It does not sounds RICE! at all. If your are looking for something loud, this exhaust is not for you. At higher rpms or on the highway you hardly notice it at all. Cab noise is very minimal and does not ring your ears out. So if your looking for anything of this sort than borla is for you. Other than that to each his own, every body has there likes and dis-likes. Thanks all who took time to read this, if you would like to add anything please do.[/img]

Thank you for all your comments.
coryjames- get some pics going when you get it on. Sounds like its going to turn out well.
Revrent- Fitment is excellent idk why your dealer is telling you such a thing. Everything went together nicely and there is absolutely no leaks.
Borla makes quality stuff, its not your average Joe muffler shop job. Maybe there trying to sell you a TRD exhaust or something.

Dealer
These are only available in the Southeast Toyota region and we've sold dozens of them without any problems. I'm not sure where your dealer is getting his info.
