Default Range After Fill Up only 255 MILES?!?

I've been searching around these forums and people have reported getting 300-344 after fill up on their range meters. How come I only get 255?
I've been really careful with my driving but it only seems to make only somewhat of a difference. On my last tank I got to 252 until my gas light went on.

PLEASE HELP!

Hi -

In my car I have not yet allowed the gas light to go on - how many gallons does it take to fill after the 255 miles? 10? How large is the reserve?

I have had results similar to yours with my 2006 xB manual trans (purchased new in May 2007; has 650 miles on it as of today 8/9/07). On my two fillups so far, I have gotten between 25 and 26 mpg.

This is no huge surprise for me, as I live in the NYC suburbs. I have had disappointing MPG's in previous cars.

1994 Saturn SW2 auto trans: For the first 5-6 years I got 15 to 16 mpg in suburban driving. After the car was broken in, mpg jumped to about 20. Highway mileage was always good - over 30, as I keep my speed down.

2000 Sienna: Still get 12-13 around town; 25 on the road.

The big difference with my xB is that with MT I really notice the numerous red lights and stop signs, since I have to start from first gear a whole lot.

How are your mpg's on 100% highway driving? I would have it checked out if any less than 30.

Ciao

Kevin,

Go to the dealer and have it checked out.

I agree you are getting crappy mileage, there is something wrong with your car.

How many times are you going to post with the same concern.

That's exactly what I get. Sounds like you are driving mostly city with a lot of stop and go I don't think there's anything wrong with your car.

According to the onboard calculator I get even less if it makes you feel any better. I'm at about 600 miles and I'm resetting it after each fill-up. The latest is saying 19.5 mpg. I do 100% city driving though. I've only been on the freeway like twice with this.

I suspect it will get better too as I put some more miles on it.

You're getting 21 based on those #'s and what people are reporting. 12 gallons at the light?

I too was only getting about 240 because I didnt want to let the car get to low. Well since we all know this is a learning computer, that is where my car reset to after filling up. I have about 4200 miles on my car now. Last week we went to a dealer show and the light came on while we were heading there. My husband didnt want to stop on the way back until we got back close to home about 24 miles. I was really concerned but we made it and than my guage reset to 273 miles to empty. I believe they have a 14 gal tank and we put 13.3 gal in at that time.

I do mostly city driving and tend to get about 260 miles on a tank. I think my gas mileage is running 21-23mpg and I'm at 4800 miles.

You're having the same semi-frustrating new buyer's experience I was having.
For the first 1800 miles I was only getting about 22 MPG in my Scion XA. Now I am @ 3300 miles and it has steadily climbed to about 30 MPG. Just give it like a month and you should see major improvement.

Yeah i'm only getting about 27 miles per gallon and around 260 when the light comes on Don't stress man your car is fine. Remember those other guys may not be using the A/C you might be they may be driving more highway than you as well. Everyone will have different mpg always. No 2 people have the same driving habits. so it's ok. I'm thrilled because i went from an rx-8 getting 15-18 so i'm happy with my 25-27 range.

Default Follow up at 960 miles

2006 1/2 xB - At 3 months of ownership and 960 miles, my most recent fill-up indicated 20 mpg. 90% stop and go local traffic and about 100,000 red lights - the only thing I hate about suburbs (Long Island).

I would take it into the dealer and have them check the fuel trim and reset your computer. It's free if you complain enough and it is under warranty.

When I first got mine, the range, at highest was 270's in the first two fill-ups. After a couple and now 3,000 miles on it, I've been able to get at least 315 miles from a tank averaging 26 mpg total.

I did notice though with each fill-up that the range would increase.

After I fillup my range always goes over 300. Usually 310 or 320 once it resets.

I usually get about 300-320 off my tank before I fill up, so its pretty accurate I guess, haha.
