DIY: How To Find Your Reverse Trigger Wire
I did this "DIY" because I had a difficult time researching online exactly where the reverse trigger wire was located specifically for a 2nd Gen xB's. So I figured I would post it up here to help someone out. The reason I needed to find the factory trigger wire is
because I installed a Camera Source Back Up Camera Kit in a 2014 Scion xB with the stock Pioneer PT546-00140 head unit. I liked the set up so much that I bought a similar Pioneer head unit along with the Scion Base Audio Wire Harness, PT546-00142,
and installed it in my 2010 xB along with the same Camera Source Back up Camera Kit.
The Reverse trigger wire is needed to send a 12 volt positive (+) signal to tell the Head unit to switch to the back up camera view when the vehicle is placed in reverse.
This DIY should cover 2008-2014 Scion xB's. One thing I did notice is that the factory red reverse trigger wire was a bigger gauge on a 2014 and smaller gauge on a 2010.
Step 1: remove the panel located below the steering wheel column. This is the panel that will have your traction control and TPMS reset switches.
Step 2: Pictured is the wire harness where the factory red trigger wire is located. The red arrow indicated which connector the red trigger wire is located at.
Note: There are two red wires on this connector. You want to use the red wire that's located in the lower right of the harness. Again, the pictures are from a 2010 xB.
I know that on a 2014 the wire is in the same location but it is a bigger gauge.
I checked this wire with a multimeter and when the vehicle is placed in park it does not sent out a 12 Volt Positive (+) Signal. But, when the vehicle is placed into reverse it does send out a 12 Volt Positive (+) Signal.
Step 3: I used the supplied red tap splice (vampire splice) to tap into the factory red wire. The green wire is also supplied in the Camera Source kit. This wire will be routed to the factory head unit harness to supply the 12 Volt Positive (+) Reverse Trigger Signal.
Step 4: Pictured is the factory head unit wire connector. There is only one that looks like this. The Green Arrow shows where you will install the other end of the tapped reverse trigger wire. The Camera Source Kit comes with the pin already installed on the wire.
Slide the pin into the harness. it can only go in one way. Please be careful and make sure the pin is installed correctly. If not, you will have to take the connector apart. I have included a link at the end of this post that directs you to the Auto Harness House website.
The site shows you how to correctly install the pin into the harness.
I hope this helps some of you guys out. Below is some info about all the part numbers I used as well as some links that helped me out along the way. Hit me up if you have any questions.

I've been looking for this for hours. I'm trying to do a new headunit, steering wheel controls, and a reverse camera all at the same time.
I couldn't find a clearly marked reverse signal wire for the XB2. Registered to thank you and ask a quick question.
After doing all wiring harness adapters I have an extra plug coming from the stock wiring harness. There were four connectors going into the stock radio, and now I only have 3. What am I missing here?

I wish I had found that when I put in a Reversing camera, back in Xmas/New Years 2014/15... oh but you had yet to find it... I looked for a long time and couldn't find it.
Ended up putting a switch in next to the Traction Control switch so I have to turn it on manually.

Yea, great job and very informative, fortunately for me personally my 2015 Scion xB comes standard with back up camera, but I know only the 2014 Release Series 10.0 has backup camera as a feature,
but this is definitely a good walk through for anyone wanting to do what you did :D

This sounds really cool. I have a 2009 Scion xB and I would like to try this. In the first post, I see two different wiring kits mentioned.
Which one should I purchase for a 2009 Scion xB?
The Factory Scion Base Audio Wire Kit part number PT546-50010 or the Scion Base Audio Wire Harness, PT546-00142?

Does anyone have the electrical schematic for a 2011 tC model and is willing to share, I'm trying to troubleshoot my intermittent AC system woes!

This is going to help me, too with xD..
I have the exact same pins with red wire for reverse at fuse box. I did mine with wireless and regretting it cause no trigger wire.
But, do you think using your method to trigger, I could use same wire to power Wireless receiver too. This is the question I have. Thanks
Receiver is hard wired now and shows snow when the transmitter turns off. Transmitter hooked to rear of car reverse light so turns on when in reverse, but looses power when I put it in drive.
The receiver that keeps powered up shows snow or static..also because no trigger connection, yet, so, it stays on the back up camera input on my pioneer.
If both the trigger wire and the receiver power come from the red wire you use might solve everything.
Either way this post you have I am grateful for.

Great
Great thread. Very clear. I’m late to the party but I’m installing a backup camera and I’m going to tap in to the reverse wire for the reverse trigger and power. What do you with the original power and ground wire that are at the back of the car? (Do you ground both?)
i originally wanted to connect to a reverse light but the wiring is too short and attempting to get to it would be a lot of work,

I know this is an old thread, but question -- where does that red factory trigger wire lead behind the dash? Does it come out in the double DIN area somewhere?
In my 2014 xB, I do see the thicker gauge red wire originating in the same position inside the kick panel as pictured above. It goes "up". My question basically is, is there somewhere easier to tap into it? Where does it come out? I thought maybe it would already be connected to the factory harness somewhere, and that I could tap it from there where it is easier to work. But I can't seem to find it in the factory harness, or at least the red wire I thought was correct in the harness, doesn't seem to be triggering on reverse.
Is it necessary to tap into this reverse wire at its origin behind the kick panel? Thanks for any advice!
