Epidemic Water Pump Problem!
#442
At 55K the water pump and ignition coils both finally shot craps. Luckily I'm still covered under warranty for the water pump and the coils are on recall.
Also on recall is the window master switch. Haven't had a problem with it but they're replacing that too while it's in the shop.

I have a 2010 xb and i have around 36k miles, my coolant level is way below the min line. I havent noticed anytihng at all, including the splash of coolant on the hood.. maybe the previous owner cleaned the engine before i got it. Did anyone have this problem with a 2010?

I personally think it would be less than an hour to do, and something like 4-5 bolts on the pump itself ;-)

Don't know for sure if this is an effective preventative, but I'm running Prestone Cooling System/Antifreeze Treatment in my coolant with the hope of its seal protection additive avoiding the pink-line-of-water-pump-death problem. Got the idea from ScionFred and since I'm all for problem prevention, I jumped in.

I just found out the hard way today, that the water pumps for the 2AZ-FE motors are not all the same!! I just assumed that with as many 2AZ-FE used in so many different Toyota & Scion models that they would be smart enough to keep everything the same (that has been their trademark) but I was wrong!! (definition of Assume: make an A$$ out of you and me!!) I purchased a new one off of ebay and after getting the old one off, to my dismay, the water pump housing shapes are slightly different. So needless to say my Xb is sitting in the driveway & losing a day of work because the dealership closed earlier than others and no stores nearby stock the part!! Its amazing how many parts stores don't carry that much scion, toyota, and honda parts when there are so many cars on the road.
Here is another observation & discovery after hours of research and a few visits to the parts stores...No stores & manufacturers supports the coolant that is used in our cars!! If people don't want to support the outrageous stealership prices ($26 at my local dealer for the Pink super long life coolant)- I have found an alternative but you'll have to do some leg work & figure out what stores in your area carry it. But I found out Valvoline Zerex line has an Asian vehicle antifreeze. Their Dex-cool antifreeze if I remember correctly supports 1996 and older Toyota & Honda models. I luckily found mine at Napa: it wasn't on the shelf but when the associate asked me for help, I asked about it because none was on the shelf. I said the web page said they had in stock and when he checked in the back, there it was!! The beauty is in was only $14 per bottle!! Thank goodness for an affordable alternative!!
Is it me or isn't it weird that we don't have a radiator cap!!
FYI its a pain in the butt to access the serpentine belt tensioner & the hydraulic tensioner type requires a lot of force!! And talk about no room!! I rented the serpentine belt tool with no help!! I had to use a 19mm socket with a 3/8" rachet....I need to buy a 1/2" metric short socket set. I can see why shops charge so much for a water pump replacement.

I have a 2010 with 55K miles now but last June (about 48K miles) I had taken it in and the stealership told my I had a small leak. They said to keep an eye on it. I had to put a little fluid in about 4 months ago but all has been fine for the must part. I'm not too worried, I'll just replace myself but with it being such a big problem I think they need to step up and fix it.

Water pump broke
Today my 2008 Scion XD @ 40,435 miles had it's water pump break. It also ruined the serpentine belt. When I was driving it to work I heard odd noise from under the hood and quick belt screech. Battery light came on and soon after the overheat light came on. Turned car off and checked radiator and let sit for a while. Turned on and drove ~1000ft to a mechanic shop right as overheat light came on again (at least some luck on where the pump broke). $264 to repair: labor, serpentine belt, water pump [$75 with lifetime warranty]

I just had to put this in here, when my xb was new , I did have a light pink line on the inside of my hood but didn't think anything of it. Now my xb is going on 7 years old and has never even gotten slightly low on antifreeze. The only problem I have ever had with this car in 130,000 miles is the oil consumption which is supposed to be getting fixed soon. It has been a very reliable vehicle.

Our 2009 pump just started leaking coolant at 42K miles.
Is there a pictorial replacement guide somewhere?
Also, After looking on the rock auto site, I see there are 2 pumps to pick from depending on engine serial number. Is it the 2AZ or the F227956 they are asking for?
Beck arnley 1311427 --> serial# starts with C-G
Beck arnley 1312272 --> serial# starts with 0-6,B,H-X
2AZ ........is in the largest font size
F227956.....is a smaller font, written underneath, just like as shown on the left
