Default winter tires

Whats up everyone! Just got my 2013 XB this weekend. Coming over from my 1st true love, a 2002 Lexus IS300. Kept the aftermarket 18s that were on her, with 225/40/18 Bridgestone Potenza RE760 sport tires. I also kept the stock Lexus wheels with 205/50/17 winter Michelin X ice tires, and plan on using those. Question I have is anyone running this size tire for winter? I know tirerack recommends 215/45/17 tires for winter. These are slightly narrower, with more sidewall. Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

How do these XBs handle in winter? Im from Chicago, and driving my RWD IS was no fun for the last 8 years, even with winter tires. I guess im curious if its best to sell the Lexus 17s setup, and pickup some steelies 16 with more sidewall?

I'm in Salt Lake, low, and on 225/35R19 summer tires. I haven't changed out wheels and tires. Ever. I manage to get around decently well. Not super well, but I manage. The traction control works pretty well. It occasionally sucks, but what traction control doesn't?
I prefer my 97 Q45 in the snow. Never had an issue with it.

The factory Bridgestones suck on ice/snow and once you're in a skid, I find it really hard to get control again on my xB, compared to cars. Then the traction control kicks in and it's a disaster...

This winter, I got a set of X-Ice 3's P205/55R16 (stock size better for deep snow) and they are doing pretty good. Found 16"x6.5" steel rims on-line classifieds.

I have also ran Blizzak WS-70's on my last car and they are really good, but wear kinda quickly. Tirerack has them on clearance sale right now.

the general arctic altimax in stock size work great, and if your in a state that allows studs even better. If your not in a state that allows studs just stud the inside shoulder blocks and don't get caught..>seg<
