Engine makes whining sound
60K miles on the wifes XD now and there is a very noticeable whine coming from the engine compartment which increases in pitch with higher rpms. It is independent from the transmission / drivetrain ( same noise even when the car is in neutral/parked).
I have read that the intake makes a whining sound but it should have been doing this from the beginning if that is the case. We are out of state on a road trip now. When I get home i will pull the belt off and run the engine to isolate the issue. In the mean time does anybody have any input? Thanks.

Usually I am just a browser on here but the sounds you were describing (whinning sound at idle and increases with rpm) was exactly like my XD. It was a bad water pump according to Toyoata and they replaced it under warranty (mine went bad at 35K miles).

Exact same here at about 38k. Replaced under warranty, whine gone.

I wanted to follow up on my post and say everyone was right.....it was a bad water pump. It finally started leaking so I took I it in. Thankfully I bought a cpo car and it has a 7 year / 100k mile warranty so I should only be out the $50 deductible.

2009 tC Whine
I have a 2009 tC, makes a whining noise when I am on the gas pedal, doesn't matter the gear I'm in. If I tap the gas when driving it will whine for about a second then stop until I press the gas again. Ideas?
