new(er) Scion xD owner and key question
Hi everyone,
I just bought a 2011 xD and am loving it so far. It only came with one key, however. The key locks/unlocks the doors with buttons and also has a red "hold" alarm button. I start the engine with the key in the ignition.
My question is: What are my option for getting a 2nd key? I know I could go and just have a non-electronic key made, but would it set off the alarm if I used it to unlock the door? Would it start the car?
Thank you for listening!
Johan

Naw a lot of people buy an eBay key and get it programmed. That's your cheapest bet, otherwise, if you have some cash to spend on this, I'd just go to Toyota and have them do it. Might spend $100 or so, no biggie. Otherwise, you can get an eBay key and take it to Toyota and they will be able to get it programmed for a few bucks. You won't have any issues with it setting off your car alarm or not starting the car. Just make sure you get one that is compatible with your xD.

the red hold button doesn't necessarily mean that it has the factory alarm installed either. its just a panic alert that will honk the horn if you hold it down, all of the keys have this.
you have the alarm installed if you have the indicator light in one of the switch blanks by the parking brake

yes it should have come with 2 keys like this
and also probably a valet key (i don't remember if they all get this or not)
though maybe the valet key was only if it came with the alarm? as it would auto arm/disarm the alarm if you used this key in a tC with the factory alarm

I bought a 2006 scion XA brand new in 2006. Basic model, no extras. Got 2 keys, no valet key, no keyless entry. My keys had black plastic caps, but no buttons to push. So, remote keyless entry was NOT standard. Sold that car, and bought van, didn't like it, so I found and bought a used 2006 Scion XA , same year ,. and it has the remote keyless entry. But the original buyer must have paid extra for it.

something was up with the keys you got maybe?, the early 1st gen xB and xA had the keyless entry on a separate fob and it wasn't part of the key itself. unless with the xAs it was optional and only came with the alarm, but that would just be an xA thing, it was cheaper than the xB1 and the xB1 had keyless standard because we had one.
as far as the xD is concerned, and any 2008 and newer scion for that matter, keyless entry is standard, alarm systems are not.
