Default Early oil change... Dealership says not a good idea

So I just called to schedule my first oil change, actcually much later than I had wanted (now in the 800mile range) and the guy specifically said they don't recommend it until at the earliest 2500.

He actually brought up the gunk that is in the oil and said they suggest letting a little "grit" build up to help the rings bite and set properly.

I know it's very much opinion based but I didn't think the guy would actually have a reason like that behind it...

What do you all think?

the factory says every 5 thousand miles. if there was a reason to do it sooner, we would be back to changing our oil every 3k. the new toyotas r designed for the 5k oil change. you are actually saving a lot of money over the life of the car. as long as you stick with the factory recommendations u will be fine. we have a guy that comes in every 3k for his oil change but he uses synthetic. now that is double the waste of money.

^^ geez... with synthetic.. it depends on how you drive.. but i usually change around the 7K mark... double waste of money indeed if that guy is changing at 3K... oy..

for the first oil change i did mine around 4500 miles... and then there are different people that say change it really early.. and then there are also others that have different methods of breaking a car in..

but i advocate the "drive it like you stole it" method vs. the baby the car method during the first 1K miles.

others just say drive it normally like you would normally do (minus the staying at the same speed/rpm thing).. which is perfectly fine in my book too.

but yea.... imo, 800 miles... wayyy too early.

I totally disagree with the tech, for the 1st oil change I would do it no later than 1500-2K miles. 2nd change no later than 5K miles. Then after that follow the normal program. You want to what the guts of an oil filter look like on even a babied engine after the first few K miles take a look at my post in the xD section. The last thing you want is those larger particles blowing by the oil filter when it is in bypass. Causes a lot of excess wear and tear.

I changed mine when I hit 2k miles & so far no problems. 5k miles on the FACTORY oil seems a bit to much IMO(especially since I broke in the motor hard).

I do follow the 5k miles OCI (oil change interval) now though.

I did mine at 1500 for the first one then the second at 4500. Now i follow a 4000-5000mile change with the Toyota dealer changes. I am switchign to synthetic my next change though. I will run that prolly 5000 to 6000miles. I just always worry about going past 6000 even with synthetic. Im a bit OCD with my ride.

Scions come with synthetic from the factory from what I understand. The stock oil in the xD was so thin cold that I have a feeling it was 0w20.

Really? Well i know they dont put synthetic back in it. I know a dealer that does a castrol synthetic-blend. But the dealership where i bought mine and got my 3 free uses the regular castrol.

Yeah almost no dealer does synthetic changes unless requested. Most around here use standard valvoline. I use my own oil and filters "except on the xd as only toyota has the filter for it right now" & have a local shop that changes it for me for $9.99 *LOL* So cheap it is not worth me doing it myself.

I can't believe scions come with Synth... that just doesn't make sense.

Anyhow the reason I want an early oil change is I throttled it up a lot of hills right off the bat to break it in and now I want the oil with all the crap taken out. I can't believe rings are still seating at 800+ miles (I would guess they have used up pretty much all their hatchings in the first few hundred if not sooner) and after that it's just gunk grinding around in there.

I am not a mechanic to be sure but that's how I feel...

My mechanic also recommends getting the oil out early for the same reason.

It's not as bad as it was years ago where you might literally have metal shavings and bits in your oil pan, but I can't really see the point letting grime and what not run around in your system...

Dude if ya want ta go for it but like everyone else says wait til at least 1500 to change it. But if you change it that soon do it again in another 1000 to 1500 miles but thats a waste of a free oil change if you use the ones from scion and they still do that deal. But damn Garage 9.99 you lucky duck. I wouldnt change the oil myself either. I gotta call the dealership were i know the service manager and see if i supply the filters and synthetic if they would still change it and if it would be cheap.

I use a valvoline express care locally that honors that price if I bring in my own stuff. I mean by the time I change it myself and then have to take my tank in to empty it, it all washes out. + I can do it on a lunch. Makes life easy.

I change mine before 5k because of where I live. It's pretty rural here. I'm sure in the city 5-7k is ok

Here is what to expect with a first oil change at around 1000 - 1500 https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=224757

Drove mine immediately like I'd stolen it off the lot, but did the first oil change at just 250 (yes, two-hundred-fifty) miles. Next change was done at 3k, which is when I switched over to synthetic. Screw the tech, do it earlier if you don't agree with him, it's YOUR car.

any tech that tells u to change ur oil any earlier than 5k is only taking ur money! i had to threaten an advisor who told a customer to come in @ 1k. it is unfair to the customer and its lying. i would much rather tell the customer the truth and build a relationship on trust and not the almighty dollar. people r gonna do what they want anyway so if u want to change ur oil every 1k, Ill be more than happy to take ur money every time.
