Default How do I Reset the "Check Engine" Light?

My Check Engine light is on, (not the service engine).

Can it be shut off by disconnecting the negative battery, ...or positive?

The car only has 7000 miles....and im suprised ... and I was wondering if it does work before i actualy do it. or should i just bring it to the dealer (realy dont want to)

Thanks

take it to autozone or to the dealer and find out why do you have the CEL light on...

btw to reset the cel just disconnect the negative terminal on the battery for a few seconds. but i would take the car to someone..

I don't know why it would come on if you coast. Are you in neutral when you coast?

The only thing I could think of is when you try to put it back in gear you're putting too much pressure on the transmission at one time. Maybe try rev matching?

I mean I'm no mechanic so I wouldn't know. I edited the last post I made idk if you saw it, but that might help. If it's still under warranty they should take a look at it. I'd rather be safe then sorry.

Time to run some engine injector gas cleaner - check the tail pipe for soot and you changed your oil when?

Neutral coasting is a waste of gas. Coasting in gear = Injectors turned off, until RPM drops below 1800.

The idle hunting sounds like it is running a little rough - get some injector cleaner like STP Gas treatment and see if that helps. Gas Cap has to be tight too - that causes a lot of problems when it doesn't seal.

It feels smooooth,,,but it does have cheap gas.

gas cap is good,clicked on.

Also, the post above says i should leave it in gear to save gas. Wow. hmmm.

Il try negative battery,if that doesnt work il get it to dealer.

its hunting because your out of gear yet still using your power steering and acc. which uses vacuum from from the motor and the alternator. In order to compensate for the drag on the motor, the ecu increases the throttle. next time your at a light, turn the wheel hard left or right and you will notice the rpms bounce, this is the same thing!

Yeah leave it in gear if you want to slow down but in neutral if you want to coast further. Check Engine light usually indicates a serious problem so back to the dealer since it is new. Keep away from cheep gas that is dirty - add the gas treatment - it can run great with throttle use but idle rough if the injectors are a little dirty. I don't recommend resetting the ECU by pulling the battery since the Check Engine was CAUSED by something that is wrong.

That is the worst idea, TAKE IT IN before your car no longer works (It could be something serious or it could be nothing, dont risk your CAR because you dont feel that you have time)

Ok, I wont lay into you, I just hate to think of people ignoring potentially serious issues. Im glad it was only the gas cap.
