Default Battery....

This is going to sound stupid.

2005 Scion xB with less than 25,000 miles, excellently maintained.

So a few weeks back went to go start the car and nothing. Got a charge and all seemed ok until tonight. Went to start it and the starter tried but could not get the car to start.

Bought this new exactly 5 years ago.

Anyway, little surprised the battery is dead and wondering what type of battery you guys suggest to replace it as it is not keeping a charge for long.

Thanks.

battery life is usually between 4-6 years on average. less if you have alot of extra stuff i.e. audio system, fog lights. etc.

so 5 years sounds about right.

i would get an optima red top battery if you do not have alot of extras. yellow top if you do.

im bout to change to an optima yellow top myself. im at a lil over 4years and mine is getting weak. i have a ton of extra equipment tho.

5 year old battery dying sounds normal to me.
Look for a deep cycle battery like an optima if you have a stereo system.
If not, then just buy something with a high cca so you don't get stuck during the winter.

I agree with the above two comments only if your looking for a very nice doorstop.

There is nothing wrong with your average Interstate Mega-tron series or Exide Select

i thought i was gonna have to get a new battery over the summer, i got my 300ZX and parked the box for about a week while i drove the new car and when i ran that tank of gas out, i went to start the box and nothing...

put a charge to it and my battery is good as new. reading 14 volts at times. i have no car audio or any of that stuff, all stock so thats probably prolonging the life of the battery.

Redneck, yes there are other alternatives that are cheaper than Optimas but work just as well or better.

I have had three optimas discharge within a week, I went as far as making sure that got batteries that came from different batches, two reds and a yellow... even went as far as putting them in my other car to make sure it wasnt the xB

so in the long run, if you add in the price of gas, plus two extra trips to Sams club to exchange the battery, plus my loss in time, and hassle with the clerks there, then the price of the cheaper Exide select, I came out ahead...

Yeah, Vanilla, my '05 xB, was built in October 2004, and with winter coming up I'm very tempted to run out and get a new battery for her instead of waiting for the expected failure.

Any time I hit 5 years on a battery I know it is not long before the dreaded silence some cold morning...

Check the Consumer Reports results. Probably going to try to wedge in a slightly oversize batt with good life at reasonable cost...

Searching online, this is what I am finding so far:

Pep Boys Bosch 36/96 Month Battery $89.99 plus $12.00 core chg

AutoZone Gold-Duralast / Battery $89.99 plus $12.00 core chg

Sears DieHard North $79.99 plus environmental/ disposal fees

Can't seem to find anything else online. Costco doesn't seem to list any batteries nor does walmart.

Suggestions?

I'm almost to eight years on the OEM battery in my SE-R. I had to crank it three times last night to get it running, though. I'm afraid its time is coming.

Need to get this battery today. If anyone has a suggestion other than what it here, please say something, otherwise it will be what is closest and that appears to be a toss up between Autozone and Sears.

Thanks as always fellow Scion xB'ers
