Default 2005 xb wont hold charge..help?!?!

Well, The other day I was Driving and all of a sudden my overheat light and battery light came on. I pulled into a discount auto parts, and everything seemed ok, except for the battery. Just needed to add coolant in regards to the overheat light. So then, as i was driving back home, the battery light came on again. And as I was parking, the car completely shut off. I tried jumping the car, but the car wont hold a charge once the cables come off. The diagnostic test said the battery was bad, but the alternator was good. Im thinking its the alternator, cause Ive had that issue on a previous car. However, i spoke to a mechanic, he stated that if the battery is really bad, it wont past the charget o the alternator. something like that. It might not even be the alternator. However, money is an issue, so I dont wanna tow it if what the mechanic said is true, I can easily replace the battery myself. Any input anyone? I would greatly appreciate it!

whats the mileage of the alternator? if it is indeed the alternator, you can just buy the replacement brushes to replace and this will fix 95% of alternator problems.
