Keyless Entry problem
Hi all, im new here... Probably because I just got a new Scion XD a month ago.
Anyways, I bought the car used from a dealer and they didnt have a Keyless entry key to give me. They said the only key they got with the car was this normal Strattec key.
I went to toyota to ask about getting a scion keyless entry key and the key itself is $100 which I can live with if needed. HOWEVER, they need to test this Strattec key first to see if it even has a chip in it to get the code #. That costs $50 and if it doesnt have the chip they said they have to force a new code# into the car and we're looking at another $400 for this.
There HAS to be a cheaper way. this seems ridiculous...
help!!!!!!

Did you purchase the car brand new? There should be 3 keys. 2 keyless entry keys and a valet key. One of the keys should have a small metal badge on it with a code. that is a your keyless access code which you will need if you ever need to program the key.
I'm almost positive all scion xD's came standard with keyless entry. You can always get a secondary alarm system that has the keyless build in, best buy and a few other local shops should have them on hand and can give you a quote on spot.
You should of had it done through the used car dealership. If they're selling the car "As Is" and it is missing standard equipment. You should shop around to see if you can find a similiar one with all the keys, or atleast one with the keyless remote features.
Hey all, an update. I got this problem sorted out. I bought a key online and just went to a locksmith that programs keyless entry. The key was $115 and the locksmith was about $80. Pretty simple fix, the dealership would have you believe this is a $400-500 fix.
I wonder if the newer models of the xD have chips in their keys, I know for sure the 08-10's don't. I purchased a copy online and was able to program it myself through some easy to follow methods. Lowes/Home depot even made the copies for free.
Even the 2013 does not have a factory immobilizer or "chip". Just a standard key, with the keyless built in to the head of the key. Any key cut at your standard locksmith will start the vehicle. The only models with it standards are the Canadian models as it is mandatory up there.
