Wind deflector shatttered-----2nd time since September
There is a reason the manual says not to have the sunroof open at highway speeds. For that reason alone they probably wouldn't replace it for you (not to mention the appearance that rocks hit it).
Toyota looked over my "case" and the way it's going to go down is that the dealership will replace it at no cost to me. They still say that the laminate was on there before and that my car was made AFTER the TSB, which is not true as the first time it happened, they said that is was made BEFORE the TSB. Either way, it is being replaced under the 12 month/12,000 dealership warranty, which is great because I was looking at $300 for the glass, and then labor at the current rate (which I think is around $110 an hour).
So, now that they’ve ordered the glass, it came in, I made the appointment, dropped the car off, all of a sudden they aren’t going to pay for it. I’ve been on the phone all afternoon and seem to be getting nowhere. The glass costs $400 and they want $675 to do the work. My insurance will cover it, but I have a $500 deductible. If this is something I have to look forward to every year, it’s not worth keeping the car. Any ideas on putting something that’s NOT glass up there for the wind deflector and how much it will costs and how to do it?
daym that sucks man, u should try to install it your self if it comes to the point where u have to buy it, but yeah definitely complain to scion corp about it.. maybe i should look into getting it made in cf like mine instead so you guys don't have to worry about the glass anymore, even with my cf one i still put mine down just in case.
They're saying that debris hit it, so it's not covered. If that's not bad enough and I face the fact that I have to pay it, they don't take AMEX. I've been in contact with someone from Scion and he was the customer service manager and he can't even do anything for me because the region manager has to approve it to be fixed under warranty. Regular glass shops won't do it and I can't seem to find a body shop that will either. If my cuts were serious, I'd consider a lawsuit, but I only got a couple of small ones on a couple of my fingers, but that EASILY could have flew into my eyes.
What would a lawyer be able to do? He had the sunroof open at highway speeds, which the manual says not to do. Second, there are signs that two rocks hit it on either corner. While it's unfortunage it happened, this is probably the reason the manual says not to have it open since a high speed rock could shatter it. The dealership is not going to cover that, same as it wouldn't cover a cracked or damaged windshield caused by a rock.
I'm taking it to a dependable body shop that's going to do it for $370 TOTAL. His book says it only takes 1 hour of labor, while this Toyota dealership says 3 hours and wants $345 for labor alone. I got out my receipt thing from last time Toyota fixed it and it even says 1 hour. That's what ____es me off and is why I'm never going back to that dealership. There's way too many Toyota dealerships in STL for me to choose from.

if you couldn't keep it open while driving why would they put it wind deflector on it at all..
So...what's the purpose of having a sunroof if you can't have it open at highway speeds? That honestly could be the stupidest thing I have heard all week so far.
There is no excuse, no reason, no justification that a sunroof flat out SHATTERS outside of being smacked with a rock.
If there was a TSB on this and you had it performed, clearly the TSB didn't fix it, and you have every right to have it replaced (although me, personally, would sell the car and never buy another Scion over this).
If you didn't have the TSB done on the car, and knew about it, good luck. You should've had it done.
But if you had it preventatively done once already, they pretty much have an obligation to fix it. I would threaten them with a lawyer if they don't cover it.
This is inexcusable, and somewhat makes me sleep easier knowing I bought a Honda, not that my Civic is perfect...
