scott17, any thoughts on the fram oil filters, me and my dad use these often since they are readily available to us. I would like to know how good these are at filtration.

This is a fascinating thread, really.

Here's a quick and dirty look inside some other oil filters, and while they are NOT for Scions, it is interesting to see the comparisons between brands that all look alike on the outside...

http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterStudy.html

====

...and from another site, info about Toyota filters...

- Good oil filters don't always have to be big. Since the mid 80's or so, Toyota have been using a type of filter where the paper is packed in, in a different manner to the usual filter. They are able to pack in at least as much paper, and hence filtering area, as a normal filter, but in a package far smaller. The stock Toyota oil filters are used on many of their racing engines. So, even though they may cost a little more, they are the way to go if you have a Toyota or are able to use them.
an a cut-away pic, too...

Some interesting reading, too...

http://www.noria.com/learning_center...p=Lubrication2

====

If I run into more elsewhere that have interesting pics and such, I'll put up links for them, too... :D

Just ran into a good review of various filters (for Hondas, in this case, but the info is still good):

http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml

And also a filter review from the same source done about a year and a half earlier:

http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/old_filters.shtml

In the new filter review they also offer up some good links to OTHER reviews, by other people, for other engines.

Interesting reading.

BTW, Thanks for starting this off, Scott! We all learn something from things like this. (For example, I've used orange-colored spin-on oil filters since there have BEEN spin-on filters, but not anymore...There seem to be better choices out there.)

Hmmmmmm... just remembering my three MGs - they didn't use spin-ons, but the older style replacable cartridges and seals in a non-replacable housing that one cleaned each time. At least one got to look at both the new and old filters...

There are several filter studies, including cut open photos, around the web. The latest one I've seen is at bobistheoilguy.com. Look under forums, oil filters. The Fram is now referred to as the "orange can of doom" on that forum. It's really crappy inside.

Fram USED to be good...seems their quality control and attention to quality design has gone downhill in recent years. This is confirmed at numerous sites that have compared filters...

Just so everyone knows the Mobil 1 is made by Champion Labs...they also make many other brands including but not limited to:
Some AC Delco
Walmarts Brand (Super Tech)
AutoZone Value Craft
STP
Duetsch
Bosch
K&N
M1
Some Motorcraft..not sold to public
Toyota's is made by Denso..it was by Purolator previously

we all know honda's and toyotas usually last forever with just basic oil changes and such, my grand ma had a civic that she just had honda do all the oil changes on and it was mint at like 180k. I think OEM is best.

This thread deserves a STICKY!

good info, I figured if Toyota puts thier name on something- it has to be good!

thats why I have always stuck with Toyota oil and filter. I may start changing my oil every 5k instead if 2.5 k!

Lavabox_v1 was kind enough to send some of the Mobil 1 filter products to get a look inside. These are them:

The Toyota 5w30, Toyota 10w30, Toyota ATF & Toyota Coolant are all made by ExxonMobil to meet the Toyota spec and then packaged into Toyota packaging!

Honda and GM also do this!

So really you are buying Mobil oil that has been tweaked to meet Toyota engine spec!

has anyone have opinions or experiments with KN oil filters for Scion? I have a two year supply but am afraid to use them until more info is available.

Its all conventional oil ... If you have a Benz then they get their oil changes with Mobil 1 0w40. If you have a Viper or a Corvette then they get changed with Mobil 1 5w30 ... Benz from from the factory with Mobil1 0w40 and all the Benz dealerships have to do warranty changes with Mobil 1 0w40 ... the same goes with Vipers and Vettes! ... There are a few other cars that also come with Mobil 1 factory filled!
