thats why I have always stuck with Toyota oil and filter. I may start changing my oil every 5k instead if 2.5 k!
The Toyota 5w30, Toyota 10w30, Toyota ATF & Toyota Coolant are all made by ExxonMobil to meet the Toyota spec and then packaged into Toyota packaging!

Honda and GM also do this!

So really you are buying Mobil oil that has been tweaked to meet Toyota engine spec!
all non-synthetic I assume.........
Its all conventional oil ... If you have a Benz then they get their oil changes with Mobil 1 0w40. If you have a Viper or a Corvette then they get changed with Mobil 1 5w30 ... Benz from from the factory with Mobil1 0w40 and all the Benz dealerships have to do warranty changes with Mobil 1 0w40 ... the same goes with Vipers and Vettes! ... There are a few other cars that also come with Mobil 1 factory filled!
nice....

Supertech oil filters are the best bang for the buck

It's a great quality filter at a very low price (<$3 at Walmart)

Here is another very good site about different types of filters and test results. I really like the pic's they have of all the filters taken apart. I was a big fan of Hasting oil filters when I owned quad 4 based GM's. Hastings also makes the filters for Amsoil. http://www.oilfilterstudy.com/

The only good FRAM filter is the FRAM x2 series filter. So, if you shop Walmart, you can get them there at about $10.00. You will notice the filter has a black rough finish on the end of it.

Here is a snip from one of the above links.

The FRAM x2 (and only the FRAM x2 Series) is probably the most heavily constructed filter I've seen so far. Though all of the Japanese made filters were of exceptional quality, the Fram x2 was as good in every way. Of note with the construction were the following features: metal screen backing the media, heavy metal end caps (all other Fram filters have cardboard), and 2 layer filter medium. Lab testing indicates this filter is fine at 5000 miles use with Mobil 1.

*** MAKE THIS A STICKY!!! ***

Sorry for yelling, Tom
This is a killer thread and should be a sticky - much better than the "killer wheel cleaning sticky"

Thank you Scott17 for finally getting the point across to me about cheap aftermarket filters. I used to think a filter is a filter is a filter. but not anymore. I'm so glad I saw your post before my first oil change. From now on it's all genuine Toyota and Honda filters for both my cars. What an epiphany!

this is a great thread. I never really thought about the filter much but after reading this I will be. I also wanted to ask since we are talking about oil, can you actually put a bigger oil pan our our cars and also is there a good solution to pull any shavings of metal if any to the bottom. i have heard of magnetic drain plugs I believe but never checked into it. Also, i have had my first two changes done at Instant Oil change. I am going to start doing it myself. Does anyone know what filters they use in general?

No real point in a bigger oil pan under normal conditions.
Your filter should be good enough for getting metal out of the system - if you need more, you have problems.
That said, some people put the on the bottom of the oil pan (magnets) and some put them on their oil filters. The filter idea is better as you'd have to take out the pan and clean occasionally if you put them there.
I think for anything normal with any new car, it's not needed.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the stock OEM filter and the TRD filter?

Great thread!

Thanks
