Default 3rd Bad Ignition Coil

xB 2008 purchase 02-15-08. 39,000 miles currently.
First 2 coils replaced under warranty along with engine wiring harness.
3rd coil/labor I paid for 05-13-11.
This is starting to look like a chronic issue with my car.
Dealer says no TSB on xB coils though I found this later...

NHTSA: Action Number: 10030353 Service Bulletin Number: 268778
  • Report Date:
    May 21, 2009
  • Component:
    Electrical System
Summary: Scion: some vehicles may exhibit a M. I. L. On condition with diagnostic trouble codes (dtcs) p0351, p0352, p0353 and/or p0354 (ignition coil primary/secondary circuit) stored in the engine control module/ecm (sae term: power control module/p

Dealer also said coil pack was "redesigned recently".
Does TSB cover xB electrics beyond 36K?
Anyone else have an xB burning through coils?

The TSB applies to early 2008 XBs only. Mine is affected but all 4 coils are still good after 50k.

Well if I did break them I won’t do it again. The tsb for the squeaking dash was also for 2008(good chance I’m wrong) yet my dash squeaked like hell

I do agree that the tc cover isn’t the best choice on the xb. But in a pinch you could get it to work.

We all make mistakes but the important thing here is to provide accurate info to others who may attempt the same thing. It appears that one can use one of the 2 available TC valve covers on a XB2 by carefully shimming the coil packs or possibly switching to TC coil packs. Do you know what model year your TC VC is off? That could be important considering that there are 2 different TC VC's. Now that you've shimmed the coil packs and they seem to be working with your TC VC, can you tell us what size shims are needed? If all's that needed is a few washers this info could be very useful to others.

i think it was a 2007. ill measure it soon to know for sue. i think its only a few washers stacked. like 3 or 4 less than a 1/4" i think.

Thanks! Information that clarifies rather than obfuscates is much appreciated! Again -- thanks !

Cool. Info like this can really help the next guy who may want to try this valve cover swap. AFAIK you're the first to actually install a TC VC so you know more about it than anyone else. If I had known a year ago that all I had to do was stack some washers under the coil hold-down I probably would have bought a TC VC instead of waiting for a used XB VC to become available.

i had the TC valve cover on my for over 4 years! did the swap when i first got my car becuase had oe sitting around and i already polished it out..

I didnt use any shims what so ever. but yet its a little different.. that why the coilpack cover worked on my car.. coil packs fit fine.. the only spacer that i used was to space up the coil pack cover to clear the top of coil packs..

the differance is between the 2 is the XB coil pack sits actuall higher.. becuase we cant use our coilpack covers on the xb valve covers becuase the coil pack cover will sit to high and a larger spacer has to be used and it looks all weired have a huge gap

I had an issue with inermitent miss and the check eng and traction controll lights went on and after a while went off... I hooked my scanner to it and it said coil pack 1 no good.. so what i did was unplug and plug back in to make sure. the engine code was cleared and ran awsome for while than the same problem came back. but this time it never went away.. so hooked the scanner up again and same thing. so i coilpack one.. i take it out a look at it .. and say to myself it its really the coil pack that went bad if i swapped it out with number 4 i should get the same code but telling me number 4 coil pack is bad. low and behold code was cleared again and car ran fine till today.. this was about 5 months ago.. and car been good ever sence.

I heard about the waire harnees issue and i was trying to avoid it.. and so far so good. i really done know maybe it maybe becuase I already had the TC valve cover? IS swapping out for a TC vavle cover really the answer to this? its hard to say.. Allt hose coil pack the dealerships are changing.. are they just changing out the coil pack just because the sanner says its bad? becuase i was ready to do the same and why would when i swapped them out withthe good one.. it ran fine? Im a ASE mech.. and sometime i question those toyota mechs.. Lucky i have the tools to do the scanning and i can try to determine before i decide to maybe take it in or just fix it my self. but some times i think its maybe a connection issue on the plug that plugs to the coilpack.

HypnoticTealMica .. if if you have acces to a scanner.. i would try to what i have been doing.. just swap it out and see if the code go away. and see if the car runs fine..

The Toyota part numbers for the relevant 2AZ-FE valve covers are:

08-11 XB: 11201-0H060
05-06 TC: 11201-28014 (05/2004 - 10/2005)
06-10 TC: 11201-28031 (11/2005 - )

Eight08customs, do you recall what year TC your VC was from? When you tightened the coils down, did you fully tighten the bolts or just snug them down leaving a small gap between coil and VC? How about you r2d2michael?

Depending on how much taller the XB coils are relative to the TC VC hold-down risers, it would be easy to damage a coil without using spacers on the hold-down bolts. Maybe one of the TC VC's is closer to the XB VC than the other?

the first time i tightened them all the way down. so they broke i think lol. the second time i left a gap but they were still sung. then i put in spacers.

they fit like normal.. I have ne clue to what year TC that valve cover was from.. I got it for free from a freind.. all i know it was all smoothed so was easier to polish out.

next time im under the hood ill go check .. never took notice to anything like what you guys are saying about the shims

Thanks guys. It seems like one of the TC VC's can be used without shimming the coil packs while the other requires shims. I haven't had a chance to compare them directly but others have and commented on how the XB coil packs sit higher relative to the coil hold-down risers on the TC VC. If r2d2michael's VC is from a 07 TC then presumably eight08custom's VC is off a 05-06 TC and is a better fit for the XB.

I guess my main concern is; are any of you experiencing multiple coil failures like I am? Or is my particular car just burning them up?
Anyone know anything specific about the TSB on the coils?
I've heard it is several pages long.
I'd like to gather as much info possible and want to try being reasonable with the dealer before I call Toyota.

I don't have any test equipment to read Scion codes.
Can you place a volt meter on both ends of a coil to determine if it is bad?

My other question is why are coils not considered part of the engine covered warranty? They are not a service item that wears out. I've never had a coil fail on other cars I've owned.

r2d2michael, did your dealer just consider your coils were no good and replaced them under the TSB? Did they do this since your car was still under warranty?

you can get a scanner for under 60 bucks at sears. it can read/clear codes. the dealer said the coils were under warrnty. im at 32k i gave them the tsb to consider when i brought my car in. not complty sure if it was the same promblem. i probly broke them myself
