Rust found on some Scion xB doors
#42
Marshall, I'm in the Central Fla. area. My XB doesn't have any rust in the places you have shown us. We are quit a ways from the coast and we don't have sea-spray problems like the ppl on the East coast of Fla. do. Maybe some of the Scion got a dose of sea spray on the trip here from Japan!
Regardless, rust sucks, especially when we keep our rides so clean. The dealerships and Scion need to take care of it. The most any of our XB's can be is 3 years old and that is way to soon to see any kind of corrosion.

There are a number of water-based "rust conversion" treatments that convert iron oxide to a phophate, and seal the open metal in a good coat of primer that can be painted over. Permatex makes one that is easy to find (it's clear stuff that turns black as it converts rust), and I'll probably put some of that on the problem corners of my box.
I've used that sort of stuff before, and should still have some in my chem locker.
My box does not live near the ocean, and has spent 95% or more of it's young life clean and under cover, so rust in it's metal to metal joints is NOT something I would have expected to see.

UPDATE!! I took my car to the dealer service center today, and they are going to fix it no questions asked. I think they seen this before. It will be in July so i will have to watch that spot. not too sure what they are going to do anyway. probably just grind that stuff out and repaint it.

My car is probably one of the oldest xBs in Iowa. Absolutely nothing on all 4 doors. All clean.
Those of you with rust, is your door weatherstrip seating correctly?
We have just had some rain here in Iowa and there was zero moisture in that area under the seal on mine. Perhaps you are looking at a defective/damaged weatherstrip problem.

On mine, both sides are identical on correct weatherstrip fit and rust stains on the paint. No apparent moisture in that area, and also no dirt or even dust. Weatherstrip was sealing the area very effecively. Does not appear to be a standing water or excessive moisture problem, but a somehow unpainted joint.

I live in Las Vegas where there is no such thing as rust. I just checked my hydrometer and it's 9% humidity. My car could probably be left in the desert and last a 100 years before a significant amount of rust was noticed. When I lived in So-Cal my projector headlights would fog. When my wife followed me in the moving van I could watch the fog disappear as we drove, and it's nevered fogged since. I also have a rifle that I removed the bluing from a year ago that someone said you should never do until you are ready to re-finish and there is not a speck of rust. My wife and I do go through a lot of Lubriderm though, the only downside of a dry environment. Or maybe its not a downside,... "Honey , could you rub some lotion on my back".

i will check mine tomorrow. i actually am noyt surprised. my mom bought a brand new corolla in 98 and within a few months it started rusting in the rear door jamb. we complained and got it fixed, no questions asked but boy was it a hassel! i hope i don't have rust but i will surely be right there with you to complain if there is. is it me or does servco have the most bs service. if you make an appointment at 8am you still have to wait for everyone else ahead of you. i went at 630 am before and there was already a line!

ok, i want to get a few detail of this problem straight....
those that have noticed rust, did you remove the black tape around the windows???
scion can void your claim because of this.
what colors has this been found on??? might be a problem with a color or two...

BSP does not have the black tape, it is black already...
other colors have black tape around the window frame.
like this...
i checked my hot lava this morning.
i have the tape, and it covers this area very well...so no rust

The rust on mine is on the inside of the door, at the 45 degree corner joint. If one moves the rubber door seal aside gently, the rust is visible on that joint where the black tape on the door does not cover it.
(As Ben said about his, the tape on mine just barely wraps over the edge of the door and stops maybe a quarter inch onto the inside, leaving the rusted seam easily visible if the rubber is simply slid aside.)
The first post in this topic shows the rusted joint, and NONE of the rusted area shown there is covered by the black vinyl on my PW xB.
