I took my Scion to the dealer this weekend for the 20k service. When I asked about the tranny oil change I was told the transmission holds around 12 qts. of transmission fluid and that it would be useless to drop the pan and only change the 3 or 4 qts. that drains out.
Anyone confirm this?
I saw a write up here about going with Amsoil synthetic and that folks were getting about 3-4 qts.

Just had my tranny oil change at 30K at the dealer for $60. I originally went to a Aamco transmission place to get it done and they looked in the computer to see what type of fluid it uses. Aamco advise me to get it change at the dealer. The Scion xB uses a special new type of trans fluid for our cars. It would be more expensive for him to purchase and he would need to charge me more. Using any other fluid, such as Amsiol would void your Mfg. trans warranty. I believe the trans fluid the dealers are using is a synthetic.

The manual trans just uses 75W90 gear oil. The Auto uses Toyota TypeIV ATF, this is not a synthetic. If TIV is not used in the trans it will make the clutch packs slip leading to the failure of the transaxle.

i dont think it holds 12 qts cuzz in the manual it says it onlee takes 2 quarts well for manual trannys anyways cuzz thats all i put in when i changed my clutch and what not and i used 75w90.....i did use the royal purple sythetic but for some odd reason i had trouble getting into gear with it so i drained it and put 75w90 and been fine ever since

Filler plug is in the front about half way up the tranny and the drain is in the back bottom. Make sure you find and remove the filler plug first before you drain it or else you are stuck with an empty tranny. Takes a little less than 2 quarts - fill up to the filler hole when it starts running out it's full. Takes a little while sometimes for the syncros to get used to the new oil and the original stuff needs replacing pretty quick - you also may see a mileage increase once it is changed. You will need about a 2 foot hose on a funnel to fill it - be very careful around the radiator.

service would be over 500bucks. granted that would be the oilchange and all fluids..
they said the Tranny Flush was around $200. is there any such thing as a flush for the tranny or does the drain/ fill method remove most of the old tranny oil?

Changing to a better lube will improve mileage - I changed it at 3600 miles. You can wait until the clutch change - shouldn't matter much. Just remember that ALL the power to the wheels goes through the transmission so if you reduce friction with a better lube you get more power to the wheels.
