Default How to remove dome and map lamp assemblies?

I'm interested in replacing the overhead and cargo bulbs with LED versions, and it was pretty easy to pry out the cargo bulb assembly. However, when I tried to pry out the dome light assembly (near center ceiling), it showed no interest in letting go (got one side and end finger tip free, but the rest wouldn't come). Haven't tried the map light assembly yet.

Any hints on how to release them?

Thanks -- Trevor

There are little slots on the lenses that are just big enough for a small screwdriver. A little pry and they pop right out.

I just pulled and the whole assembly came out. You will feel like you are going to break it but you should be fine.

Slots, eh? Sounds good, I'll take a close look in daylight tomorrow.

That's exactly how I was feeling with the dome light assembly -- like I was practically hanging off it !

By the way, do six LED map light replacements and four LED dome and cargo replacements work well? They wouldn't be high power LEDs and I'm still trying to decide if cool white is better in the dome/cargo application than a natural or warm white . I'm guessing warm white might not be optimal.

Kinda off-topic but is it me or does the dome light run really hot after, say, 10-15 minutes?

Trevor, this thread has the links for 5 DIY videos that Captain ButterKnife made covering interior LED lighting swaps.

Well,as it turns out, your inputs applied to the map light, but not the dome light .

I found out the hard way the dome light is held in by four plastic hooks located two at each end and pointing outwards towards the sides of the car. Pulling until it feels like it's going to break resulted in exactly that -- one hook broke off.

Best guess looking at it is that you have to lever the assembly towards one car side far enough for those two hooks to release, lower that end far enough for them to clear, and then move the assembly in the opposite direction to free the last two hooks. I currently have the broken hook gluing, but doubt it'll be a great fix !

Ah, ha -- so, apparently the lens comes off pretty easily -- that would definitely have been a better solution for me than breaking a hook.

Thanks for the thread ! Now, if I can just figure out the best white temp to install .
