Default Gas Guage Stuck & Decreased MPG 05 xA

Hi fellow Scion family,
(2005 w/ 80,000 miles)
When I fill up my xA with gas the needle goes to FULL. But as gas gets used the needle only makes it back down to a bit above half way mark, (say 3/5 of a tank) even though I know it should be at less that 1/4. So the needle works correctly above 3/5's mark to full mark.
Also I have seen in other posts about gas mileage decreasing. I could always count on a full tank getting me about 350-360 miles. Now I'm lucky if I get to 290-ish.
I will add that this all started about 6 months ago after I had my mechanic switch my xA back to stock struts & shocks. As far as seeing a drop in miles per gallon that drastic I don't see any correlation with suspension. But as far as the gas guage needle issue, is it possible he accidentally bumped, jolted, twisted something that affected the fuel delivery system (fuel pump, sending unit) while he was in the area?
I am going to have a thorough tune up (plugs, filters, oil etc) and check/clean or possibly just replace the MAF sensor. Tire inflation is perfect. Using same gas station and regular grade gas as always.
That may solve the MPG issue, but that gas guage needle thing is really such a pain in the rear-end. Thanks so much scion family.
