Default Short & basic Eclipse AVN 5510 review

I had a Pioneer D3 for about 5 months and was very happy with it. I just couldn't get the radio to sound like I wanted to. Even with amps added it still wasn't doing it for me.
Id adjust the settings weekly.
The navigation of the D3 was great. Easy to use and had almost all the addresses and POIs I wanted.

Well recently I found the Eclipse AVN5510 on sale. I have owned Eclipse in the past and I know they are big on sound quality.

So I was off to take out the D3 and slip the 5510 in its place. Installation was the same. THE AVN 5510 IS NOT PLUG AND PLAY AT ALL The only part that was plug and play were the steering wheel controls. That didn't bother me to much. Just had to spend an extra 10 minutes on wiring.

Right away with out even touching the settings the Eclipse sounded way better.
After about an hour of tweaking, I was in love. X 4556
The sound quality is amazing. It sounds much cleaner. The mids stand out greatly. the sub woofer is not boomy at all and sounds great.
The steering wheel controls work just as they would with the stock radio, no delay at all.

My only gripe is getting adjusted to the NAV lay out. I had a little trouble with the D3 at first but that was because it was a new toy

It seems like the NAV on the 5510 is a lot slower. I typed in my gfs work into the system and it took about 10 sec to find and load the destination. the D3 was very fast, much faster than this. The only thing I can hope for is that the GPS is still trying to calibrate.

Im not hating on the D3, its a really good value. For around $1000 you get nav,xm,custom screens and button colors. The nav is good.

The 5510 kicks the D3 to the curb on sound quality and that was my main concern. The NAV is nice but I really don't use it much.

Eclipse AVN5510 gets a 8/10 on sound quality (1-10 on a scale i made myself so you know its a guideline to go by )

6.5/10 on the nav

I was going to take pics but forgot the camera at the GFs house. I will try to get some up on Monday.

thanks for reading. If you have any questions just ask.

i just install 5510 today. I love it that i can use the steering
wheel control.

The first 2 time i start up the car. The map show i am in west coast. ( I am in Atlantic City). The third time the navigation got the right location.
The dvd was easy to bypass, just ground the parking wiring.
i was luck that i still wire harness from my old Kenwood mp3 deck.
Like what Blazedplacid said. the speakers wire , power and ground wire ARE NOT DIRECT PLUG IN.

yeah ill admit. the d3 is a huge PITA to tune right or at least till its forgiveable. took me about 2 months to get it a place where i actually like it. lol. i blame the less flexible parametric-EQ and i hate the stupid sound stage stuff..

but good review none the less and congrats on your new HU

Gamma,
are you having trouble with your NAV disk? Mine keeps telling me to check disk. So I have to eject it and re insert it.

It sucks

no, it read the disc fine. I even copy the map disc on a dual layer dvd+R. I use the backup disc , because i know i will scratch it up .

I also tried some local POIs and it has crap compared to the D3 =( It does have some larger bussiness but not small mom and pop like the D3 did =( I will keep messing with it, im about to go to lunch and will mess with it then.

ill let you know in an hour

ok its working alot better with the original disc.

What brand of disc are you using?

Im most upset about the POI's lack of ...POIs. there are very few in this town.

Im glad the audio part of this radio is so great

Well I'm gonna give you my review on the Eclipse AVN7000 (Currently own Pioneer AVIC-Z2).

Don't really like Eclipses' NAVs. I owned the Eclipse AVN7000 for a couple of months. Had it in my previous car. Sold it for $1,300 (Bought it for $1,350. Circuit city accomodation.. straight from Eclipse.)

Pros:
-Eclipse sounds much better and alot cleaner even before tweaking than the Pioneer.
-ESN: 4 digist password. If you uninstalled the HU (Got it stolen), it won't start up without the password. Light on the headunit would blink every 3 secs when the car was off. Looked like an alarm, pretty cool feature. Also had a detachable faceplate but that was because it was a dingle din.

Cons:
-The navigation part was horrible
. Went to Six Flags this summer and it took me on so many back detours that it made a 2 hour trip into a 3 and a half hour trip.
-Satellite wouldn't really pickup where I was. If I was under a I-95 (Highway) bridge.. waiting for the light, it would throw me on I-95. It would also throw me off when highways came to a 3-way fork.
-Had few POIs compared to Pioneer and never had the ones I needed.
-Only gives you 3 routes. Nav views were ugly and confusing. (Z2 NAV is amazing because it adjusts as you turn in a 3D way.) With the Eclipse I used to get confused wether I had to turn left or right if I missed what the lady in the GPS said..lol
-Eclipse doesn't give you enough options to customize the headunit to your preference.
-iPod adapter wasn't even 100% compatible with the AVN7000. I had to go through Sirius radio and couldn't even see what song I was playing. Imagine finding a song in a 80GB iPod when you have no titles or anything..
-Had a HDD but it was strictly for the NAVi.
-Had a Memory Stick (up to 32MB online) input.. wouldn't read Pro Duos.
-Ugly menu/interface!
-Didn't have Bluetooth.

Can't think of anymore...ugh..pretty sure there's alot more, I just can't remember them.

GammaTNT.. Bypassing it was too easy. When I first installed the AVN7000, I had to drive around the block for the GPS to pickup.. It first had me in Cali :S

I feel the same way.
I just wish that for 1400 bucks it would have a better nav setup.

Im hoping next year they will have an update disk and it will fix all these problems

I just brought a pioneer avic-z2 and was wondering how did you get the door to close and where did you buy those black parts on the side of the navi?

i got the black parts on the side of navi from Circuit City.
And to get the door close, you have to drill holes on the stock metal bracket.
