Default Wind deflector shatttered-----2nd time since September

So I'm driving home from work today, sure enough, POW!!!!! glass flies all over me and my trunk. Luckily I only had a cut on my finger. This is the second time since September that this has happened and no one can get me in to look at it until next week......WHAT THE HELL!!!! Will it be covered by the recall/safety bulletin like it was 10 months ago, or will I have to pay for a new one? How much does one cost anyway?

Now you will probably have to pay for a new one....why didn't you get the recall done like you were supposed to? It was put out for this reason so that they aren't liable. They even sent out a mass mailing to all scion customers...It pays to do it right the first time. Sorry it happened to you though, but live and learn. Hopefully you have glass insurance?

I'm assuming since he said this is the second time its happened he did go in for the recall since he last one was covered. IIRC the recall before before sept of last year

I beleive they sent out notices to those who had the vehicles with this issue. But it effected 05's and 06's.

Actually, Scion is lucky their customers aren't class-action suing them.

And really, it's pretty funny that on ScionLife, someone will actually yell at you for having glass above your head shatter and fall into the cabin of your car.

Who's yelling? And it wasn't stayed how fast he was going... The manual explicitly says to NOT open the roof at highway speeds. It'd be tough to shatter it otherwise.

Not to 'open' it, as in the act of opening? Or keeping it open at highway speeds?

^^ as in keeping it open.

also.. there was never any recall... the TSB for the deflector added a protective laminate behind the glass to prevent glass from flying all over the place.. it was only a safety precaution for when the glass did break.

seeing as how glass flew all over tham and to his trunk... i can only assume he didn't have it done... at which then there's no one but him to blame for that.

the TSB is provided free of charge and can be done at any dealership. you probably only need to call and make an appt. that way they know they have the supplies on hand to do it.

and finally.. as far as replacement.... it depends.

I DID do the TSB and that’s why the first one was free, but seeing how the glass flew into my car, I’m questioning whether they put the laminate on or just replaced the glass. I spoke with another dealership last night and he said that the TSB states that Toyota will fix the deflector free of charge “ONCE”, but it also states that the fix is to put a laminate on, but since it’s questionable on whether they put it on or not, he said I would have to take it to the same place as last time since they will have to pay for it out of pocket. He also said that if they give me any problems, call him and he will contact Toyota and see if they can do it for me free of charge. They can’t look at it until next week, but I’m taking it in tomorrow anyway and talking to the manager about it. I will also try to contact Toyota if this ends up coming down onto me. The way I see it is that the dealership did NOT do their job correctly and I don’t see why I have to pay for it. As far as speeds, I opened the roof parked at work like always, and was only going 55-60. It’s broken exactly like before, the whole bottom part (by the windshield) is gone and sharply cut as well as the sides and the top looks like 2 rocks hit it on opposite sides, but I HIGHLY doubt 2 rocks could hit my car about 2 feet apart lol.

Does the manual really say not to open it at highway speeds? I read the whole manual and didn't see that. I always close is when I get on the highway anyways because you get better gas mileage using the a/c rather then the windows on the highway.

That's really poor design if the manual actually says not to open it at highway speeds. I didn't see that, but who reads every single sentence in a manual anyway?

The shaking bothered me, so i stopped using the sunroof in the open mode on the highway, i bring it in, then put it out to its first stop, so its barely out, but its inline with the car

I had nothing else to read and was waiting somewhere so I read it. It has a lot of good info on your car and random features in it.

Why wouldn't you read the whole manual?
