Default stock internal boost level

I'm thinking about building a custom turbo kit, and before I get started I was just wondering what you guys who are turboed would say is a safe amount of boost for a stock engine? I'll of course install fuel stuff and it ill be tuned, but Im more interested in what the stock internals and bottom end can handle.
Thanks in advance.

I think I remember seeing someone running 14 pounds, but I wouldn't do that for too long. I would stil with 12 or less.

Depending on your tune and fuel type, i wounldn't reccommend more than 10 for daily driving, and 11-13psi for the track or dyno pull. Even that's pushing it.

Any power goal you have in mind?

i think anything over 300 is starting to push it... 230-280 is a good chunk of power to be dealing with ... asuming u want a long term or reliability aswell

I think he meant boost wise, not HP. But he is more than welcome to try and put 300psi into that 2AZ all day long!

Thanks for the link i searched a few times but got a bunch of random things. As for power I'm just looking to hit a steady mid-low 14. I was thinking about 8psi, but Im used to driving a mustang so over 7psi was pushing it. So I figure 8 would be a good bit of performance and be reliable from what I've read.

one more question though does anyone know how strong our blocks are? I dont see any need to stud the lower end or beef up anything but if anyone has experience opinions would be great.

8lbs wont be an issue with a good tune. There are a lot of people on here running 8lbs + on stock internals daily.

8psi on 1 turbo is not the same as 8psi on another turbo...size of housings/turbo vary...8lbs on a 16/18g is no the same as 8lbs on a gt30 or larger turbo... since he is going custom no one knows what he will make on 8lbs because we dont have enough info.. going on lbs of boost alone is very broad.

im pretty sure thats why Joe asked what his goals in pwr are... that can is a factor in deciding what kind of turbo mostly like he will be using.

well im thinking generically i usually dont like to set hp goals since te goal can change a project from doing it reliably to doing it sloppy. I would rather have a 220hp car that would last 100k+ miles vs a 300hp car that will blow in 50k. It seems that 8 is a common DD psi so thats probably how i'll go and possibly a bit more at the track, I just dont wanna end up warping a head or blowing a rod sky high in a system i thought could handle more

you can always have a low boost and high boost setting.. -5-6 lbs low boost.. 8-9 lbs or 10 for high boost

EASY! It was a joke based on your response.

Thank you, I don't need a lesson on turbocharging.

When you are dealing with larger numbers I agree there are more factors involved. One could assume that he is likely going with a T3/T4 setup (maybe not?) and 8lbs on stock internals with a good tune is fine for daily driving.

yeah Ive thought about that, but that gets into expensive tuning and installing a boost controller, and an expensive one at that since I would want to go electronic since manual controllers are just annoying. I'm in college so this is a long term very budgeted build, and looking for as many sponsors as possible to complete it faster. I'm just trying to get design notes and some solid numbers so i can make a proper presentation to companies so they will know I am serious.

Hell you like N/A you can make a killer set up. Go something like Independent throttle bodies, with 11.1 compression heads. Get some custom cam made. stroke it .30 over. port and polish. Stud the bottom end. Put a closer sync gear set in the transmission and add a 2 stage 150 shot of nitrous you'll be a mag worthy N/A that will eat a STI.

As for my setup. Probably going with a garrett turbo since they sponsor my SAE team already. Then exhaust will just be a generic log style manifold to a 3" dump to a high flow cat. with a flowmaster 30 series muffler and stock tale pipe. The exhaust will be 3" all the way back too. Probably going with a spearco IC and the garrett turbo has an internal waste gate. Probably a forge BOV might go with the 007 diverter valve to make it not so noticeable and give me alittle more power. pretty much decided on 8 PSI all the time though. Oh and i'm doing all custom piping with spectre piping
