what speed do you drive at....
on the freeway? im a little concerned about what stress the engine is having by 60 mph on california roads. or is it having any stress? what speed are you guys "crusing" at? what rpm's?
I so 65 most of the time and between 75 and 80 on the interstate everyday to and from work. RPMs are right at 4000 doing 80 MPH. I worry a little too but it is a Toyota engine so I think it will be alright.
Toyota engines seem to be built to spin, so I don't have any problem with running them at reasonable freeway speeds.
Remember, Briggs and Stratton industrial engines run 3600RPM, day in and day out, and they are hardly as well-engineered and built as a Toyota car engine.

If the revs on your Scion seems high at freeway speeds, then I'm guessing you're used to driving big American iron.

I wouldn't worry so much about it. Any new car engine in good working order should be able to run at 80-90% all day long in normal temeperatures day in day out without failure. The run the engines at WOT for extended periods right off the assembly line to help seat the valves and weed out any manufacturing errors.
I've driven to Sedona from Phoenix (a mountainous highway drive, lots of hills) in the summer when it was 90-100 degrees and I was able to maintain 70-90 mph all the way up, with the A/C on and 2 passengers along for the ride.
The engine can be heard loud and clear at 4-6000 RPM, but it's nothing to be concerned about, I promise. That is what the redline is for. Let the engine warm for 30 sec - 1 min, stay out of the red area and you are all set.
No worries.
