Just wanted to know from owners of the xB. What's the cabin noise like? I know the xB is shaped like a brick on wheels which makes me worry that there's gonna be tons cabin noise.

 

Our xB has less wind-noise than our 2000 Mazda MPV. Engine noise is comparable.
The stock radio can drown out anything, but seriously, I think it's as good or better than other FWD 4 cylinder cars.

 

is not loud. I think your asking about wind noise. There is not much at all. I was told that there is some kinda noise suppresion stuff in the car to help out with that.

 

That's what I meant, wind noise. The reason this concerns me is cause of the shape and size of the car. And what I'm looking for in a car is a comfortable ride at an affordable ride. And for me, comfortable means nice and relatively quiet ride.

Then I have to decide between the 3 scions out there! Damn you Scion for making such sweet cars! Gah!

 

I am getting a wierd noise when I am on the freeway and the two back windows are rolled down. It sounds like the wind is distorting the music. If i roll down the front windows it solves the problem. it also causes like a wierd vibration. So any xb owners with an xb drive on the freeway and when your at a bend on the freeway have your rear windows rolled down. Do you get that wierd distrortion? I dont know whats up though.

 

The car is very smooth and quiet. Its really until it gets broken in where like any car trim panels and things develop small vibrations here and there. This all happens anyway like I said to any car.
The Scion is really an excellent choice for dependability, economical use, and comfort. I have grown to love the whole thing. Ask anybody that owns one-

Now for the wind noise coming from the rear windows, that merely an air pocket you have if the front windows are rolled up. The xB has a lot of head room and space from each side, this will develop because the air is trapped
in all that luxurious space, especially on the freeway at 80 mph's. Just roll the fronts down halfway or at least cracked, and then roll the back windows down all the way....it will disappear.

I think the road noise is pretty subdued, even though the shape of everyone's favorite box would lead you to believe otherwise. Even at high freeway speeds. I have gone up to 105mph on the 5 freeway headed to San Diego on an early morning, and the cabin is calm and noise barely noticeable IMHO. This is with factory single disc cd unit at not cranked up levels.

Although, I do not have any kind of intake just the stock airbox and exhaust soI think this helps...

Road vibration is also minimal even with Hotchkis swaybars on (I added these after about a month of driving without them) although there is a better feel in the steering.

I hope this helps, at least with the xB, I wonder how the xA and the new tC ride...

 

I noted this wierd resonance with the windows down as well, with either the front or rear windows rolled down. The only way I could avoid it is to not roll down the right and left windows in the same way.

With the windows up, the xB is very quiet. Not Rolls quiet, perhaps, but certainly quiet for an econobox.

I would of thought the "boxy" design of the xB would bring a great amount of wind noise when driving at highway speeds, but it doesn't.

The problem I do have is "I believe" with the door seals of the xB. If the wind blows a certain way I will hear tons of wind noise. It's like the wind is getting inside the door and flowing backward between the door frame and rubber seals. Then it exits which is a continous flow / noise if the wind is blowing that certain way. I don't know what way the wind is blowing when this happens since I never have my windows down.

Anyone get this kind of wind noise?

The xB cabin noise when on the road is bad my wife has a new BMW when i get out of it and into my xB I hate it I mean so much noise
so I guess there is a ref point to all of this but it is not built to be smooth like others if you take it apart to work on it you will see it was built to be cheap.

The xB makes allot of road noise if you have low profile tires.

 

I get more engine noise then wind noise. But I must say I expected that with the price of the car!!

All in all I think it is very quiet for what it is..........you can't compare it to a BMW which is a luxury car and is at least $15,000 more.

 

My xB is quieter than our 2004 Matrix xr on the Highway. I'm running stock 15s on the optional scion alloys our matrix has lower profile and wider tires . It's gotten to the point that we take the xB on longer trips just because its quieter on roadtrips.

 

Exactly why I am not bothered too much by this. For 16k I don't think you can beat the vehicle. The room is great, the motor shifts smoothly, engine noise is about non existant, the interior is laid out flawlessly, I love the xB.

BMW and Scion should not be compared in any way as stated above. Ok, maybe reliability

 

compared to my 1990 mustang with headers and an offroad exhaust, this thing is quiet as can be. :D

 

If engine noise is a concern (which it has been for some) you can always spend $70 for Dynamat Hoodliner and stick it under the hood.

It works pretty well for me. At some speeds the xB sounds like a golf cart

The quitest Scion you're gonna get is the tC. It just has more sound deadening material.
Our boxes aren't real noisy, especially for the price, but they are definitely noisier than many cars. Wind noise isn't a problem though, it's mostly engine noise, and with lower profile tires road noise will be greater. My Toyo Prxoes are very quiet tires, but are still noisier than the stock 15"s. It's easily muffled with the stereo though

There just isn't much sound deadening material on our econoboxes, and with all the windows and the screaming 1.5L engine, it's just a magnet for noise.

I plan on installing a whole bunch of Dynamat/Brown Bag very soon, mainly up front and in the engine bay.

 

with my low pros, its a little loud, but its very bearable......
