I'm sure that there's always one car out there that's a lemon, you know what I mean?

I'm at about 40k now on my xB and I've had no serious problems with it. I have a light output problem with the passenger headlight that I still need to bring to the dealer and then the control arm on the box is loose. Other than that, no major problems. I'd expect no car to be perfect.

Until my engine or transmission fails like a Dodge or Chrysler, then I'd be upset.

Cool

yea in all fairness I'm lowerd .. Live in south florida where my xb was more of a jet ski.... Passing slow by cars stalled in water ... My car ran great ... Mabye this had part to do with it ? Picked up car today ... Just the cpu in steering shorted ... So it was replaced ... And car is perfect again ... My jeeps and ford all were dying by 45000 miles ... Back to modding... Ordered some stuff to give to my xb when it gets back ..lmaoo

You're not the only one thinking this. So far I've had a leaky water pump, bad wiring harness, and the A-pillar creak (still holding out to get this one fixed). All this under 30k miles.....and seeing this thread gives another thing to worry about down the line.

Default 08 power steering went out

I have been a proud owner since October of 2007. My 08 Xb has 50,000 miles on it. I have had no trouble until now. I started it last night and went to back up, the power steering was gone. The power steering light came on in the dash cluster. Its going to the dealer today.
The Xb has been great, but I bought this car to avoid expensive trips to the shop. Its paid off and I was thinking this would be my car for the next 200,000 miles. I wonder now....

Wonder if this is a weakness with the steering cpu moisture seal? Wonder where it's located -- sounds like not in the cabin . Have to look into it I guess.

My PS light just came on. I was not even able to turn the wheel at all. How did you guys drive it to the dealer?

That sucks. I mean really, you improve the steering by controlling it with a $600 part!! Stupid... I love my car, and am not getting rid of it, but I think Ill be buying that ext warranty before the 36k is up.

weirdest thing happen. I tried to clear the warning by resetting the ecu. no help but when i press the button to reset the tire pressured on the driver side. Then the power steering light cleared and my steering is back to normal.

VVN, that is truly odd that the tire pressure reset cleared the steering issue... wow.

These cars have electric assist and the unit is mounted on the steering column under the dash covers - I saw it while routing a power wire thru the bulkhead grommet. So the rack and pinion would not have to be replaced.

I have heard about issues with the electric assist on some GM cars - don't know if it's the same unit

The thing that bugs me about this is the overcharge the bean counters have assigned to an ECu soley because they think they can. The reality is those controllers are no more expensive than a transistor radio. If they've designed something that's prone to failure, the ultimate pricing should clearly reflect that fact, not a what-the-market-will-bear philosophy. Personally, I really despise the God-damned suits -- they've got their money -- and it came from us !

I just bought my used 2004 xb with 81,0000 miles. Steering just went after a month of ownership. I bought it for $7,000. I still love the car but dammit, I just bout the darn thing. $1,500 to replace steering from Toyota. My mechanic wasn't sure if he could do the job.
