I can see the motor going that long with proper maintenance on a delivery vehicle. The xB 365Motorwerks used to fit their turbo had 212k and held the boost just fine. If it's an automatic, they wouldn't be bouncing it off of redline and the shifts would be smoother on the motor. The enemies of contact surfaces are heat and friction, so proper replacement of lubricants and coolant should keep them working mostly indefinately. Gotta love a mechanical throttle and timing chain.
I don't really find it feasible for someone to drive that much every single day for 5 years straight.
If he's doing around 60mph of highway driving, he's driving about 2 hours to his destination and then 2 hours back.
But if this guy has weekends off, then I suspect he could be doing, let's say 8 hours a day just to be respectful of time, rate, and distance.
That's not enough time to have an actual work day, unless he operates on no sleep.
Hopefully he bought his 05 model when it came out in 04. So that would at least give him 6 years of driving hell in order to get 400k miles.
This is very easy to do. Here in Chicago, standard Crown Victoria taxi's are being replaced with xB's left and right. Cabbies work usually 6 days a week and during this recession have been working upwards of 7 days a week. Its very feasible that this car was a cab someplace and thus could rack up 220miles a day.
I used to do training on office equipment and had to drive 3,000 miles a month (on a Dodge Neon). Thats 100 miles a day and I was only driving to and from various Chicago suburbs. I got the car with 29 miles on it, and after two years turned it back in with 79,000.
Its very likely this car had over 400,000 legitimate miles in five years.

I hate every time there's a story about something people want to tear it apart... Whats the point just take it for what it is.. WHO CARES HOW HE GOT THE MILES... it was a delivery vehicle how do you know other people didn't drive it? most company cars get driven by others as well..
It's just so crazy to see that familiar odometer with 402xxx on it! Amazing. If its not true yet someone will hit that I'm sure. Toyota engines are great. I'm gonna be hitting 6 digits soon enough, I'm at 93k.
some people don't just believe everything they ever hear. there was no progress with this story. it was just, holy cow i have over 400k miles now. it's pretty fair to be skeptical of this story. it's not about "tearing it apart".
Thats my XB. Got an email with a link to this site. I replaced tires 6x and front brake pads 5x and alternator. I use regular oil and change every 20K - 30K. The dry starts from changing the oil too often will kill it. Never changed any other fluids. Still going strong. I never posted to an Xb forum before cuz its just a car to me.
